EMQS is a technology group that launches and scales digital subscription products globally. We are recruiting a Head of Payments to establish and lead our new payments department. This role requires an individual to build the department's infrastructure while simultaneously performing all operational tasks until a team is recruited. The core objective is to implement a many-to-many payment architecture that separates our product portfolio from our acquiring network.
 

Role Details

Key Responsibilities

1. Department Establishment and Manual Operation

• Department Creation: Design and implement the internal processes, technical workflows, and organisational structure for the new Payments unit.
• Direct Execution: Perform all functions personally during the initial phase, including merchant account applications, routing configuration, and data reconciliation.
• Technical Sovereignty: Maintain the capability to perform any task within the department's remit if staff are unavailable or technical issues arise.
   

2. Many-to-Many Infrastructure Management

• Architecture Design: Develop the logic for a scalable payment layer that allows one website to distribute transaction volume across multiple MIDs.
• Product Decoupling: Build an environment where websites are independent of specific merchant accounts to ensure that a provider outage does not stop processing for any product.
• Transaction Routing: Configure and maintain the technical logic that directs traffic based on card type, geography, and transaction value.
   

3. Acquiring Strategy and Bank Relationships

• Merchant Account Acquisition: Proactively secure new acquiring banks and Payment Service Provider (PSP) relationships to maintain a surplus of available MIDs.
• Provider Management: Act as the primary contact for external partners, negotiating commercial terms and Merchant Category Codes (MCC) to improve processing performance.
   

4. Risk and Compliance

• VAMP Management: Maintain responsibility for chargeback and fraud ratios to ensure all accounts remain below card brand monitoring thresholds, specifically the 0.9% limit.
• Dispute Management: Supervise automated alert systems to resolve disputes before they are categorised as official chargebacks.
• Volume Distribution: Coordinate with Growth managers to ensure transaction volume is distributed to mitigate risk across the acquiring network.
   

5. Data Automation and Reporting

• Automated Systems: Transfer all financial reporting from manual spreadsheets to an automated system using SQL and business intelligence tools.
• Reporting Accuracy: Audit internal databases against bank statements and marketing tools to ensure data integrity.
• Forensic Dashboards: Maintain real-time monitoring of approval rates, MID health, and net profitability.

Requirements

• Experience: 5+ years in Payment Operations or Billing Management within high-volume B2C subscription environments.
• Infrastructure Expertise: Demonstrated experience in designing and managing multi-MID and multi-URL environments.
• Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in SQL and business intelligence software.
• Acquiring Network: A pre-existing network of acquiring banks and payment agents.
• Industry Knowledge: Expert understanding of 3D Secure protocols, card brand compliance, and payment routing.
• Language: High proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.

     Who You Are

• Experienced engineer with strong architectural knowledge. You understand code and can speak the same language as engineers, but you're not expected to write code daily. At least 7 years of experience in technical roles with increasing responsibility required. Python expertise is required; Django experience is strongly preferred.
• Customer IT and enterprise experience. Comfortable joining customer calls to discuss SSO implementation, SCIM provisioning, security reviews, data flow, and integration architecture with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
• Exceptional communicator. Comfortable presenting to customers, explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences, and maintaining clear documentation.
• Research-driven problem solver. Skilled at evaluating technical options, comparing vendors, identifying requirements, and making data-informed recommendations.
• Experienced people manager. You've run teams of senior engineers or tech leads, made executive-level technical decisions (build vs buy, vendor selection, security architecture), and can influence across the engineering organization without micromanaging. 
• Vendor negotiation experience. You've led vendor selection processes, evaluated technical fit and integration complexity, managed RFPs, and maintained ongoing vendor relationships.

Another key part of the role is using AI in a practical way. This is not about random experiments or shallow use of tools. It is about speeding up research, drafts, updates, repurposing, and production of useful materials while keeping quality high. We want AI to reduce manual work, increase speed, and make the team stronger.

You will also need to fix the way marketing work enters the system. Marketing cannot run on a model where whoever shouts louder gets the work first. We need a clear intake process, real prioritization, and a direct link between company strategy and what the team actually does. You can delegate work, but you cannot delegate accountability.
 

What we need from you
 

 You have real experience in B2B services such as IT services, consulting, outsourcing, agency, or enterprise tech services. A pure consumer, e-commerce, or brand-only background is not enough for this role. You know how to build a marketing system, not just move tasks between people.

You know how to work closely with sales and make marketing useful to sales. You can package complex services into clear commercial language. You know how to use AI in a practical way that improves speed and output. You raise blockers early, push decisions forward, and do not come back later with excuses for why nothing moved.

You are also comfortable saying no to internal requests that do not match company priorities. We need someone who protects focus instead of feeding chaos.
 

 This role is not for
 

 This role is not for someone whose background is mostly SMM, employer branding, or content for the sake of content. It is also not for someone who wants to “do marketing” but does not want to own messaging, website direction, SEO priorities, sales materials, and execution discipline.

It is also not a fit for someone who uses AI superficially, repeats obvious things, or expects the CEO to define, structure, and push everything personally.
 

What success looks like in the first 90 days
 

 In the first 90 days, we expect a clear audit of the current function, one backlog tied to company strategy, a proper prioritization model for incoming work, and a messaging framework with clear ICPs, value propositions, proof points, and narrative blocks.

We also expect a concrete plan for website improvements, SEO priorities, and core materials, with ownership, deadlines, and dependencies. By that point, the first AI-based workflows should already be live and saving time in real work.

What success looks like in the first 6 months

Within 6 months, key website pages should be upgraded, core sales materials should be fixed, and marketing should stop operating like a chaotic internal service desk. Output should become faster, stronger, and more useful to sales.

A good sign of success is simple: the CEO is no longer manually editing most important texts because the system is producing work at a high enough level without constant rescue.
 

Scope of ownership
 

 We expect this role to review and improve the full set of company marketing assets and outputs. This includes website copy, landing pages, SEO structure and priorities, case studies, one-pagers, decks, brochures, event materials, printed materials, digital marketing materials, sales support materials, follow-up assets, social media content, email sequences, outbound support assets, proposal support materials, and the overall consistency of messaging across channels.

It also includes reviewing how these assets are created, updated, approved, reused, and measured. We do not need someone who only manages channels. We need someone who can raise the quality, speed, consistency, and commercial usefulness of the full marketing output of the company.
 

First assignment
 

 One of the first responsibilities in this role will be to review the current state of all major company marketing assets and marketing workflows, identify what is weak, outdated, inconsistent, slow, or low-value, and propose a clear plan for what should be fixed, rebuilt, automated, or stopped.
