About the Role

The company is developing a consumer commerce platform that combines real-time 3D interactions with the purchase of physical products, including a real-money wallet and operational workflows. The technology stack is built entirely around TypeScript. The engineering team is small and experienced, working closely with the CTO. This role is for a highly experienced individual contributor to take technical ownership of backend architecture across a customer-facing web product, an internal operations platform, and supporting services. A key part of the role involves systems where correctness and reliability have direct financial impact, such as wallet and ledger functionality, transaction settlement, verifiable outcome generation, and fulfillment workflows. The platform uses an event-driven architecture within a TypeScript monorepo, including Fastify BFF services, asynchronous workers, shared domain components backed by PostgreSQL, MongoDB for analytics, Valkey for caching, RabbitMQ for messaging, and S3-compatible storage with CDN. Infrastructure runs on AWS ECS with infrastructure-as-code and automated CI/CD. You will work closely with the CTO on architectural direction and platform evolution.
 

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of architectural decisions across backend services, including service boundaries, data ownership, idempotency, outbox patterns, caching, and failure handling.
• Document important technical decisions and revisit them as requirements and system constraints evolve.
• Design and evolve financially sensitive functionality, including double-entry wallet accounting, payments and withdrawals, inventory settlement, and auditable outcome-generation mechanisms.
• Work across layers when necessary, from database schemas and Drizzle migrations through domain logic, Fastify APIs, asynchronous consumers, and React interfaces.
• Provide technical leadership for the internal operations platform supporting catalog, fulfillment, finance, and customer-support workflows.
• Establish engineering standards around contract-first APIs, deterministic testing, database migrations, and code-review quality.
• Mentor other engineers while maintaining a hands-on individual-contributor role.
• Own production reliability through observability, incident response, capacity planning, performance analysis, and ongoing reliability improvements.
   

Requirements

• 8–9+ years of professional software engineering experience, including several years with direct responsibility for architecture and technical decisions in production systems.
• Proven experience defining service boundaries, selecting appropriate storage technologies, and scaling production systems.
• Practical understanding of capacity planning, caching strategies, database connection management, performance bottlenecks, and production debugging.
• Ability to evaluate architectural trade-offs such as consistency vs. availability, synchronous vs. asynchronous communication, caching vs. source-of-truth access, and build vs. buy decisions.

Senior Full-Stack Engineer, Platform and Compliance (Node.js / GCP)

Project makes secure mobile access simple. Retailers and grocers use our QR-based system to control access to restrooms, fitting rooms, and locked merchandise. A visitor scans a QR code on our signage, opens a lightweight web app in their browser (no app download, no account, no PII), and receives a one-time digital pass that opens the door. The platform maintains SOC 2 compliance and is live with national retail and grocery chains.

We are a small, senior, distributed team. You will be our primary engineer, working directly with our CTO and leadership. This is a part-time position at 50% capacity: roughly four hours each weekday, and those hours must fall within US business hours. Where you work is flexible; when you work is not. The role deliberately blends three things: product engineering, DevOps, and security compliance ownership. If you want narrow scope, this isn't the job. If you want to run the whole platform of a real product in the field, it is.

What you'll own

• Product engineering. Our stack is Node.js and Next.js: a multi-tenant web application on Google Cloud that generates and validates one-time access credentials, plus the services and databases behind it. You'll ship features, fix what's broken, and steadily improve the codebase.
• Platform and DevOps. The full GCP footprint: services, managed databases, IAM, secrets management, backups and tested restores, and cloud cost. CI/CD and release engineering with safe, reversible deploys (we use Bitbucket with a PR-based workflow).
• Reliability. Monitoring and alerting (Sentry for errors, BetterStack for uptime), incident response, and real root-cause discipline: no production changes before diagnosis, and postmortems that actually change things.
• Security and compliance leadership. You own our SOC 2 program end to end: controls, evidence collection, and audit cycles, managed in Drata with our external auditor. You will also lead our ISO 27001 certification, from gap analysis and ISMS scoping through risk assessment, controls, policies, and the certification audit.
• Provisioning tooling. Config-file-based device provisioning across our product SKUs, QR and signage file generation, and our internal sign-to-door linkage app. Part of this job is documenting and automating these workflows so they never depend on a single person.
• Hardware integration. Our credentials are validated by access-control hardware running our OEM partner's firmware (Wiegand protocol). You'll work with the partner's engineers on integration and field issues, define test cases, and represent engineering in those conversations.
• Data and support. Software-side support escalations and usage reporting (Looker Studio), in partnership with our operations team.

What we're looking for

• 5+ years building and running production web applications, including meaningful time as the owner of a system, not just a contributor to one.
• Expert-level Node.js and production experience with Next.js, plus solid relational database and API design skills.
• Hands-on GCP experience: deploying and operating services and managed databases, IAM, monitoring, and cost management. Strong AWS/Azure backgrounds welcome if you can come up to speed on GCP fast.
• Real DevOps chops: CI/CD pipelines, environment management, secrets handling, backup and restore you've actually tested.

Some platforms have undocumented APIs, bot detection and changes that arrive without notice. We need someone who can understand how those integrations work and keep them reliable when the platform, traffic or data changes.

We're hiring a senior full-stack engineer to keep production reliable and customer data correct. You'll plan for a workload of 50 million jobs a day, including bursts, slow upstream services and retries. You'll also build integrations and customer-facing features in Laravel 13, Inertia and React.

What you'll do

• Investigate production problems using logs, metrics and the actual request and job flow. Identify who is affected, contain the problem and verify the fix.
• Keep queues and webhook delivery reliable. Handle retries, duplicate events, rate limits and worker failures without losing data or letting one account hold up everyone else.

What we need from you

• You've shipped and maintained Laravel applications with real users, and you're comfortable building in React. Inertia experience helps, but is not required.
• You have operated queue or worker systems in production at substantial volume. You understand concurrency, retries, duplicate execution, backpressure and how databases and external services limit throughput.
• You can describe a production incident you personally investigated, the evidence that led to the cause and how you proved the fix worked. Explain the workload you owned in concrete numbers.
• You have reverse engineered an API, web client or similar integration. You can reason about HTTP headers, cookies, request signing, TLS fingerprints and rate limits.
• You check that data means what the product says it means. Missing information, failed requests and legitimate zero values need different handling.
• You use AI regularly and can show how it improves your work. You verify its output and understand the code you ship.
• You investigate problems independently, keep the team informed and raise blockers early. You know when to involve someone else in a decision.
• You don't need to have handled exactly 50 million jobs a day. Tell us what you have operated, how it failed and how you measured its limits.
