The role

We're looking for a Design System Specialist who lives and breathes Figma architecture. Not a generalist product designer: a specialist who builds component libraries, design tokens, and scalable systems that engineering can build from without friction.

Right now, each new module is often redesigned from scratch, and the frontend rebuilds components each time. Your job is to fix that at the root: build one clean, well-structured, documented design system that becomes the single source of truth for the whole product.
 

This is a contract role to start. If you build the system fast and well, there's a clear path to convert into a permanent role maintaining and evolving it. How quickly that happens depends on you.
 

What you'll do
 

• Build a scalable Figma design system from the ground up: components, variants, properties, and states
• Define and implement design tokens (colour, typography, spacing, elevation) for consistency and theming
• Architect everything with proper auto-layout so components are flexible and engineering-ready
• Create clear documentation so designers and developers can use the system without a walkthrough
• Establish naming conventions and structure that scale as the product grows
• Work alongside our existing designer (strong on creative and visual design) and our frontend team, so the system maps cleanly to how components are built in code
• Set up the foundations for design-to-development handoff
   

What we're looking for
 

• Proven experience building design systems from scratch, not just using existing ones
• Deep Figma expertise: advanced components, variants, properties, auto-layout, and library management
• Deep expertise in native Figma Variables (Modes, Collections), with explicit experience mapping them to code tokens, so engineering can import design tokens via JSON in one click rather than re-entering values by hand
• A systems thinker: you turn visual chaos into clean, reusable, logical structure
• Experience working alongside frontend developers, and an understanding of how design systems map to code. Our frontend is built in React with Tailwind CSS, so understanding utility-first, grid-based styling is a strong plus: it makes handoff dramatically faster
• Strong documentation discipline: your systems are usable by others, not just by you
• Experience in product / SaaS environments, ideally complex or enterprise products
• Able to work independently and fast: you can scope, build, and ship a system without heavy supervision

bina is a globally distributed digital school serving families in 50+ countries — tiny classrooms of up to 12 students, Cambridge-accredited, ~87 NPS, USD 2.7M cARR growing >20% QoQ. We are positioned to reach 10k+ students in the next 4–5 years.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will own architecture and end-to-end delivery for the distributed, event-driven services and real-time data-analytics workloads that power the school. The actual code is increasingly written by AI — your real job is defining problems precisely, orchestrating agents, and maintaining quality across parallel workflows. You will work directly with Dima (R&D).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Design and own distributed, event-driven systems and real-time, high-concurrency data workloads end-to-end (requirements → architecture → implementation → QA → deploy).

- Build and operate the data layer (PostgreSQL, key-value stores, caching).

- Design clean, versioned service boundaries and APIs; integrate third-party systems with deliberate attention to contracts, idempotency, rate limits, and backward compatibility.

- Drive delivery through structured agentic workflows — running 2–3 in parallel — across the full SDLC.

- Uphold an explicit quality bar: automated testing, code review, CI/CD, observability, security-by-default.

- Own secure handling of sensitive data and lead incident response when needed.

MUST-HAVES

- Proven software architect, or a strong senior engineer who independently owns end-to-end system design.

- 6+ years of professional software engineering.

- Production-grade proficiency in Python and Go.

- Distributed, event-driven systems experience, including real-time / high-concurrency domains.

- Strong data-layer fundamentals — PostgreSQL, key-value stores, caching strategies.

- Hands-on AI engineering — currently operates 2–3 parallel agentic workflows in practice; up-to-date knowledge of LLMs and modern agent harnesses (consumer chatbot use alone does not qualify).

PROCESS

The aim of the project is to maintain enterprise Data Platform's release processes and strategies. The team is responsible for taking the
high-level release strategy principles from the Data Platform's governance body (the PMC or equivalent replacement) and defining the actionable processes to implement them for client.

• Responsibilities:

  Developing and documenting a process procedure for release management;
  Running the mechanics of the release and creating release artifacts;
  Monitoring and applying patches for third party dependencies;
  Document and mediate the governance gap between the stakeholders and the developers to promote consistent application of processes to all Data Platform development activities.
  Manage creation of release notes detailing the relevant changes;
  Merge clean PR/MRs into correct release branches, according
  to the release strategies defined;
  Security & Vulnerability Management;
  Coordinate with project developers for code patches;
  Help the governance body to establish effective release principles;

• Mandatory Skills Description:

  Proven experience in Software Release Engineering or Platform
  Maintenance for large-scale distributed systems;
  Strong experience in Software Configuration Management (SCM) / change management;
  Hands-on experience with the OSDU Data Platform, its architecture and
  build mechanics used by it;
  Expert-level proficiency in GitLab CI/CD, pipeline automation, and managing complex release branches;
  Strong familiarity with Java, Python, and NodeJS build and dependency
  management ecosystems;
  Ability to communicate and resolve conflicting inputs across competing
  interests.
