Project overview

The role supports key internal and external Institutional Business applications composed of multiple modules built with Java (Swing front-end) running on Weblogic, JBoss, and increasingly OpenShift. Business logic is managed via Sybase stored procedures or middle tier services. The systems provide critical functionality for transfer agency, unit management, and asset allocation, supporting departments such as Investment Operations and Index Funds.

 

Position overview

We are looking for a skilled and proactive Java Support Engineer with strong investment domain knowledge to join the IT Production Services Operations team. Reporting to the Application Support Manager, the successful candidate will provide day-to-day application support for these core business systems. While the focus is on support and incident management, some involvement in development and fixing/enhancing modules will be required.

The role involves close collaboration with business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure service integrity, timely incident resolution, and adherence to coding and change management standards.

Support is provided within an 8 AM to 6 PM (UK time-zone) window on a shift basis, with flexibility on start times (8, 9, or 10 AM) to complete an 8-hour working day. Out-of-hours support is provided on a rota basis as and when required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line support for core business applications, ensuring business functions operate smoothly
  • Investigate and resolve incidents promptly, maintaining accurate records according to Incident Management Matrix and SLA
  • Identify and proactively address capacity, performance, or operational risks
  • Recommend cost-effective, technical, and business solutions
  • Conduct trend analysis to identify repeat issues and implement process improvements
  • Incorporate quality management, security, and best practices into all support activities
  • Ensure all changes follow agreed Change Management procedures
  • Collaborate with IT teams and external providers to resolve complex hardware/software issues
  • Provide support within an 8 AM to 6 PM window on a shift basis, with flexible start times to complete an 8-hour working day

  • Assist in training new team members

 

Requirements

  • Proven experience in Java development and Java EE applications
  • Excellent working knowledge of Java, SQL, and ORM technologies like JPA2 and Hibernate
  • Strong experience with Sybase databases (version 16 or higher)
  • Familiarity with middleware technologies (SOAP, RESTful services, messaging)
  • Skilled in using development and database query tools such as GitHub, IntelliJ, Eclipse, Aqua Data Studio
  • Experience with investment management domain (IMC qualification or similar preferred)
  • Ability to meet deadlines and focus on delivery
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a lateral and innovative approach
  • Willingness and aptitude to learn new technologies
