Backend Developer (Rust) – 4connection Messenger Platform

THE 4CONNECTION PROJECT

4connection is a client-commissioned messenger platform combining secure group messaging, interest-based communities, and a serious dating and matching layer. The platform targets the DACH market with a planned launch in early 2027 and a clear commercial roadmap defined with the client, 4connection FlexKapG.

The backend is the proprietary core of the product. The clients (Android in Kotlin, iOS in Swift) will be released as open source. The backend remains closed source.

Architecture highlights:

• Three-layer architecture: Connection Gateway, Routing and Business Logic, Storage
• Cell-based horizontal scaling, approximately 500K users per autonomous cell
• Zero-knowledge server design: message content, keys, and sensitive metadata are not accessible to the server in plaintext

THE ROLE

You will work directly with the technical lead on the Rust backend. The architecture is defined, the stack is chosen, the client is committed, the first internal milestones are running. We are looking for an engineer who wants to take real ownership of significant backend subsystems and write code that will run in production for years.

This is not a Rust learning position. We expect you to be productive in Rust from week one and to bring opinions and experience to the table.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Implementing backend subsystems in Rust against a clearly defined three-layer architecture
• Building and maintaining the WebSocket and HTTP connection layer (Axum, tokio-tungstenite)
• Implementing message routing and group fanout over NATS
• Implementing the persistence layer against Redis, ScyllaDB, and MinIO

• Solid systems programming background (Rust, C, C++, or comparable) and a real understanding of ownership, lifetimes, memory layout, and concurrency
• Working knowledge of async Rust and the Tokio ecosystem
• Solid network programming foundation: TCP/IP, TLS, WebSockets, HTTP
• Awareness of cryptographic principles relevant to end-to-end encrypted, zero-knowledge systems: key management, forward secrecy, authenticated encryption, secure key derivation. Practical experience is a strong plus.

Your mission – maximize the Net Profit and Long-Term Value (LTV) of your multi-platform portfolio of apps across iOS, Android, and web by aligning product innovation with data-driven performance marketing.

Unlike a solo founder, you aren’t starting from zero. As a Business Unit CEO, you have:

• immediate access to AIBY’s historical data from 70+ apps to see what works
• centralized Legal, Finance, and HR so you can focus 100% on the product and the users
• significant UA budgets and infrastructure already in place

What you will do:

• P&L Ownership: you’re 100% accountable for the revenue, marketing spend, and operational costs of your unit
• Strategic Roadmap: define the “Why” and the “When”. You decide which features to build based on their projected impact on retention and monetization
• Growth & Monetization: work hand-in-hand with your UA Lead to optimize ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) and Payback Periods. You’ll oversee the subscription funnel, A/B testing, and paywall optimizations
• Cross-Functional Leadership: build, structure, and scale a high-performing team across Product, Growth, Marketing, Engineering, and Design
• Resource/ Capital Allocation Strategy: you have the autonomy to decide where to “bet” your resources. If a specific app in your unit is scaling, you pivot the team’s focus there immediately
• Partnership with the Board and Founders: you’re involved in strategic decision-making at the C-level, with direct impact on business metrics, financial results, and the product ecosystem

What you should have:

• 7+ years of experience in product-based B2C businesses (subscription, mobile/web)
• 3+ years in leadership roles with direct P&L ownership (CPO, CMO, GM, CEO, Product Director, Head of Product, Head of Marketing, etc.)
• Product-Marketing Hybrid expertise: you can speak “Engineering” to the devs and “ROAS” to the marketers. You understand how a product change affects ad performance and vice versa
• Proven 0→1 and scale-stage experience: launching new units, restructuring businesses, scaling early-stage products to meaningful revenue, or founding a startup
• Strong financial acumen: you live in the dashboards. You understand the nuances of cohorts, LTV/CAC ratios, and churn rates in a subscription-based model
• Mentality: ownership, clarity, decisiveness, speed, and persistence
