This is a high-impact individual contributor role with broad scope. You will operate at the intersection of product, engineering, and business, driving strategy, architecture, and execution for some of the most critical areas of Preply.

At Preply, being a Staff Engineer is about multiplying impact beyond a single team. You don’t just execute, you help define what problems matter, align teams around them, and drive solutions across the organization. You’ll partner closely with engineering and product leadership, shape technical direction, and raise the bar for how we build and scale.

You’ll be joining one of our Product Tribes — Learning or Monetization:

• In Learning, you’ll help build the next generation of AI-powered, personalized learning experiences for millions of users.

• In Monetization, you’ll work on high-impact systems like payments, subscriptions, and bookings — directly influencing revenue, conversion, and the future of how tutors earn on the platform.

   

What you’ll be doing

• Shape technical strategy & drive execution. Partner with Engineering and Product leadership to define and co-own the tribe’s engineering strategy and technical roadmap. Lead end-to-end strategic initiatives, from ideation to delivery, translating product vision into clear technical execution, aligning scope, milestones, and delivering measurable outcomes iteratively.
• Lead architecture & platform evolution. Act as a key architect for the future state of our systems. Evolve core services into a scalable, reliable platform by defining target architectures, driving migrations and deprecations, and ensuring technical excellence across performance, availability, and cost efficiency, always balancing long-term vision with pragmatism.
• Raise engineering excellence & developer experience. Continuously improve how we build. Identify bottlenecks, reduce friction, and drive initiatives that increase team productivity. Champion high engineering standards through RFCs, post-mortems, and quality frameworks (instrumentation, evaluations), ensuring we build the right things in the right way.
• Operate as a multiplier. Extend your impact beyond your own work. Mentor and influence Senior Engineers, Tech Leads, and Engineering Managers, contribute to hiring, and elevate the overall technical bar. Stay hands-on for the most complex and high-impact challenges, leading by example where it matters most.

• Drive technical decision-making. Own critical technical and strategic decisions, including build-vs-buy trade-offs. Lead tooling and vendor evaluations with a clear understanding of total cost of ownership, ensuring decisions align with both technical needs and business goals.

   

What you’ll bring

• Strong Python expertise. Python is a core part of our stack, so we’re looking for someone who is very comfortable designing, building, and reviewing production systems in Python.
• Strong engineering foundations & system thinking. You have a solid background in software engineering and architecture, with experience designing and evolving large-scale systems. You’re able to derive technical strategy from business goals and understand how APIs, services, and data flows translate into real user impact.
• Hands-on, strategic mindset. You connect high-level strategy with execution. You’re comfortable diving into code, building proofs of concept, and iterating quickly with teams to validate ideas.
• End-to-end ownership. You take ownership from ambiguous problem definition through to delivery, launch, and operational stability, with a clear focus on measurable outcomes.
• Ability to influence and align. You’re an excellent communicator, able to articulate technical vision, trade-offs, and business value to engineering, product, and leadership stakeholders. You influence without relying on formal authority and help align multiple teams toward shared goals.
• Product-minded engineering. You approach engineering with a strong product lens - making thoughtful trade-offs and connecting technical decisions to user experience and business impact.
• Comfort operating across domains. You’re able to move fluidly between different types of work - new feature development, system design, architecture evolution, migrations, and process improvements.

What you’ll be doing:

You will work in a cross-functional team alongside the Product Manager, Product Designer, UX Writers, Data Analytics, Technical Leads, Engineers and other cross-functional team members to deliver engaging features through A/B tests and build top-notch products, including, but not limited to:

• Develop and own backend features using Python/Django, supporting the creation of new backend services as well as design, create, and/or troubleshoot integrations with third-party vendors.
• Think beyond the code and about our customers, understand their needs, and define solutions with the team;
• Balance short-term speed of development with the long-term technical quality of our systems;

• As a Senior Engineer, you will leverage your experience to guide the team in making informed technical decisions, such as continuous improvement of best practices (test culture, code reviews, monitoring and scalability of our tools). 

   

What you need to succeed:

• Exposure to architectural patterns of a large, high-scale web application (e.g., well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms);
• Familiar and willing to support small JS/TS tasks when needed;
• Expertise in troubleshooting issues, identifying the root cause, mitigating it, and setting up safeguards to prevent future issues;
• High level of self-organization, ownership, and responsibility;
• A great collaborator with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Minimum B2 English level;

• Willingness to be on-call for your squad (1 week every 5 weeks).

Project Description

Development of a portable, high-fidelity audio device integrated with AI assistant capabilities. The project focuses on creating a high-performance consumer electronics product with a focus on quality sound and battery efficiency.

What will you do

• Developing circuitry solutions and PCBs for battery-powered wearable device;
• Developing schematic diagrams according to technical specifications and routing 4+ layer boards accordingly;
• Writing technical documentation for the developed devices (documentation for manufacturing, assembly, testing, manuals, etc.);
• Providing technical consultation during the testing phase and introduction to production;
• Providing technical support during the mass production phase (in case issues are identified);
• Designing PCBs to fit within ready-made enclosures;
• Selecting optimal components during PCB development;
• Adhering to standards and regulations during the design process;
• English Proficiency: Upper-Intermediate (B2). Ability to conduct technical discussions, participate in meetings, and write professional documentation/emails for international clients.

What You Need For This Position

• Degree in a relevant technical field;
• Experience with and confident proficiency in Altium;
• Understanding of and experience with electronics - calculating and simulating circuits (analog and digital);
• Experience in routing 4-6 layer printed circuit boards (PCBs) and bringing them to mass production;
• Experience with "dense/miniature" designs (e.g., smartwatches, wearables, SoM carriers);
• Experience designing and routing rigid-flex printed circuit boards (PCBs);
• Experience working with RF (radio frequency) circuits and high-frequency signals;
• Experience designing devices with consideration for certification requirements (LVD, EMC);
• Experience in preparing documentation for PCB manufacturing and assembly;
  English Proficiency: Upper-Intermediate (B2). Ability to conduct technical discussions, participate in meetings, and write professional documentation/emails for international clients.

We implement A/B tests to prove the value of our initiatives and improve our product based on data and students' and tutors' feedback. What you’ll be doing:

You will work in a cross-functional team alongside the Product Manager, Product Designer, UX Writers, Data Analytics, Technical Leads, Engineers and other cross-functional team members to deliver engaging features through A/B tests and build top-notch products, including, but not limited to:

• Develop and own backend features using Python/Django, supporting the creation of new backend services as well as design, create, and/or troubleshoot integrations with third-party vendors.
• Think beyond the code and about our customers, understand their needs, and define solutions with the team;
• Balance short-term speed of development with the long-term technical quality of our systems;

• As a Senior Engineer, you will leverage your experience to guide the team in making informed technical decisions, such as continuous improvement of best practices (test culture, code reviews, monitoring and scalability of our tools). 

   

What you need to succeed:

• Exposure to architectural patterns of a large, high-scale web application (e.g., well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms);
• Familiar and willing to support small JS/TS tasks when needed;
• Expertise in troubleshooting issues, identifying the root cause, mitigating it, and setting up safeguards to prevent future issues;
• High level of self-organization, ownership, and responsibility;
• A great collaborator with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Minimum B2 English level;

As a Senior II Backend Engineer, you’ll set the technical direction, lead cross-functional projects, and build systems that power Preply’s global growth engine. Your work will shape how millions of learners connect with tutors worldwide, tackling challenges that are complex in scope and critical to our success.

We are tech-agnostic, meaning we are open to considering candidates with diverse technology backgrounds, such as Java/Spring, Node.js/Express.js, Ruby/Ruby on Rails, Scala/Play, PHP, or Golang.

While Python is our primary programming language, prior experience with it is not mandatory. What truly matters is your enthusiasm for learning Python and your ability to adapt quickly to using it for product development.

What you’ll be doing

• Own and drive technical vision across squads
• Develop and own backend features using Python/Django, supporting the creation of new backend services as well as design, create, and/or troubleshoot integrations with third-party vendors.
• Scope and lead cross-functional initiatives involving design, data, product, security, and other engineering teams.
• Design and implement scalable backend systems, data pipelines, and integrations with third-party platforms
• Mentor and coach junior and middle engineers across squads
• Improve performance, tracking, monitoring, and reliability of our systems with an eye on long-term scalability.
• Collaborate closely with PMs, EMs, designers, and analysts to make data-informed, user-centered decisions.

• Champion engineering best practices: test automation, documentation, observability, and quality-first culture.

   

What you need to succeed

• Exposure to architectural patterns of a large, high-scale web application (e.g., well-designed APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms);
• Proven experience leading complex, ambiguous, or greenfield projects end-to-end
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills (English level B2+)

• Willingness to be on-call for your squad (1 week every 5 weeks).

   

Nice to have

• Side projects or product ownership experience.
• Experience designing systems for marketing attribution, experimentation platforms, or recommendation engines.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP) and modern DevOps practices.
• Familiarity and willing to support small JS/TS tasks when needed.

We are looking for a talented Python Developer to join our Development Team on a full time long term basis. You will be at the core of our talented Web Apps teams and focus on building the most advanced and meaningful apps and workflows on the latest web technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

As a Python backend engineer, you will play a key role in further ecosystem technical implementation and enhancement. We expect and encourage you to take initiative and be result-oriented and proactive in communication, architecture design, technical implementation, testing and reporting.
