Junior Game Designer

to $600

Game Design Documentation | Action RPG | Soulslike | Unreal Engine 5

Cactus Punch is looking for a motivated Junior Game Designer to join our development team and contribute to an ambitious Dark Fantasy Action RPG inspired by the Soulslike genre.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to grow in game design, learn from an experienced team, and help turn gameplay ideas into clear, structured, and actionable game design documentation.

Your primary responsibility will be creating, organizing, and maintaining Game Design Documents (GDDs) in English. This role requires strong writing and analytical skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work through routine tasks while maintaining a high standard of quality.

We are looking for someone with a solid foundation, a genuine interest in game design, and the motivation to keep learning.

What You'll Do

  • Game Design Documentation: Write, structure, and maintain game design documents describing gameplay mechanics, systems, features, rules, and player interactions.
  • Balancing: Tune the game's difficulty curve to deliver a "tough but fair" experience that keeps players in a state of flow.
  • Continuous Learning: Develop your game design skills, learn the team's workflows, and gradually take on more complex design tasks.
  • Information Structuring: Turn ideas, discussions, and existing materials into clear, logical, and easy-to-understand documentation.
  • Design Specifications: Describe gameplay logic, requirements, conditions, rules, and edge cases in sufficient detail for the development team to understand and implement.
  • Documentation Maintenance: Keep documents organized, consistent, and up to date as the project evolves.
  • Research & Analysis: Research game mechanics, genre conventions, and reference titles to support design decisions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with Game Designers, Programmers, Artists, and QA to clarify requirements and ensure documentation reflects the intended gameplay experience.
  • Iteration: Incorporate feedback, improve documentation, and refine details based on team discussions and project needs.

What We Expect

  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in game design, either in a commercial role or through personal projects that you can demonstrate and discuss.
  • Portfolio: Examples of your work, such as game design documents, mechanic descriptions, personal game projects, prototypes, or other relevant materials.
  • English: B2 level or higher, with strong written English. All game design documentation is created in English.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to break down complex ideas into smaller, understandable components and identify missing information or unclear logic.
  • Learning Mindset: Genuine interest in game design, openness to feedback, and motivation to learn new tools, workflows, and approaches.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to work carefully with rules, requirements, descriptions, and documentation details.
  • Reliability: Ability to manage tasks independently, follow agreements, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent documentation quality.
  • Routine Work: Willingness to handle repetitive documentation and refinement tasks. We value consistency, precision, and patience just as much as creativity.
  • Knowing genre: Familiarity with Soulslikes.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 4/5.
  • Hard skills in other game development directions.
  • Experience creating prototypes or participating in game jams and indie game projects.
  • A genuine interest in challenging third-person combat, dark fantasy worlds, and gameplay systems.
  • Experience working with tools such as Jira, Obsidian, or Slack.
  • Basic understanding of game development workflows and collaboration between Design, Programming, Art, and QA.
  • Sketching or drawing skills.

What We Offer

  • Remote-First Work โ€” work from anywhere and collaborate with an international development team.
  • Full-Time Employment โ€” become a dedicated member of the team and contribute to the project's ongoing development.
  • Compensation โ€” $400โ€“600 per month, depending on experience and skills.
  • Professional Growth โ€” develop your game design expertise, take ownership of more complex tasks, and grow into a broader Game Designer role.
  • Mentorship and Feedback โ€” learn from the team, improve your documentation skills, and develop a stronger understanding of game development.
  • An Ambitious Project โ€” contribute to an original Dark Fantasy Action RPG with a strong focus on challenging combat, atmospheric worldbuilding, and immersive gameplay.
  • Real Production Experience โ€” see how game design documentation supports the development process and helps bring gameplay ideas to life.

About the Project

We are developing an ambitious Dark Fantasy Action RPG inspired by the best elements of the Soulslike genre, combining challenging third-person combat, atmospheric worldbuilding, memorable encounters, and a dark fantasy setting.

At Cactus Punch, game design documentation is an important part of our development process. We need someone who enjoys making ideas clear, organizing complex information, and helping the team build a shared understanding of how the game should work.

This position is a great opportunity for someone who wants to build a career in game design, gain hands-on experience in game development, and grow together with the project.

If you're passionate about games, enjoy structuring information, and are ready to learn, we'd love to hear from you.
