Senior WordPress Migration / Gutenberg Developer

About the Project

A web development project centered on migrating existing websites into a custom, proprietary block-based WordPress environment think Gutenberg-like architecture built on a bespoke framework rather than standard WordPress themes or page builders. The developer will own the full migration process: rebuilding layouts, preserving content structure, and implementing everything within an established design system and block framework. Clean, structured work that demands real depth, not shortcuts.

Responsibilities

- Migrate existing websites and content into a custom Gutenberg-like block framework, rebuilding layouts while maintaining visual and structural fidelity
- Develop and extend custom Gutenberg blocks to fit within a proprietary block system rather than relying on page builders
- Handle full content migration including media assets, metadata, internal links, and URL mapping with 301 redirects
- Implement SEO preservation measures throughout the migration: metadata, structured content, canonical handling, and ranking continuity
- Work within an existing design system to ensure all rebuilt components conform to established patterns
- Build and manage Full Site Editing templates, template parts, patterns, and reusable blocks
- Troubleshoot block compatibility issues and regression bugs across browsers and devices
- Maintain a clean, disciplined workflow across dev, staging, and production environments using Git

What We're Looking For

- 5+ years of WordPress development experience with a strong command of its architecture, hooks, and APIs
- Deep, hands-on expertise in Gutenberg and the Block Editor - custom block development, block-based themes, and Full Site Editing are central to this role, not peripheral
- Demonstrated experience building within custom or proprietary Gutenberg-like frameworks; able to understand an existing block system and work within its rules rather than reinventing the wheel
- Solid PHP skills including custom post types, custom fields, taxonomies, and WordPress core APIs
- Proficiency in JavaScript and React as they apply to Gutenberg block development and editor customization
- Proven WordPress migration experience covering content, media, URL mapping, 301 redirects, and SEO preservation
- Strong frontend discipline: responsive implementation, accessibility, and cross-browser QA
- Comfortable working with a defined design system rather than applying off-the-shelf themes or visual builders

Nice to Have

- Experience with large-scale or multi-site WordPress migrations
- Familiarity with proprietary block frameworks like Frame or similar tools
- Regression testing experience in a block-editor context
- Experience working with structured content at scale (complex taxonomies, custom field architectures)
