About the role:
We are looking for a Senior network architect / Network & embedded systems engineer to join a defense technology project focused on improving the reliability, scalability and intelligence of a constrained wireless sensor network.
The project involves an existing multi-layer wireless network with gateways, repeaters and end devices, dynamic topology, routing and path management, constrained node capacity, radio-quality telemetry and battery-dependent node availability.
The engineer will work at the intersection of network architecture, wireless communications, embedded systems, telemetry and network simulation, helping the team understand the current system, establish technical baselines and identify opportunities for optimization, automation and AI/ML-assisted network intelligence.

 

Responsibilities:
Network architecture & Protocol analysis
- Analyze the existing wireless network architecture and communication layers
- Understand gateway-to-gateway, device-to-gateway and device-to-device communication
- Analyze network discovery, joining, routing, path selection and path recovery mechanisms
- Model network topology, node states, links, routes and state transitions
- Identify network constraints related to repeater capacity, child-device limits, radio airtime and node availability
- Identify current bottlenecks, failure modes and architectural limitations
- Establish technical baselines for network behavior and reliability
Wireless & Network telemetry
- Analyze available RSSI, SNR, packet-loss, battery, availability, topology and routing telemetry
- Understand how telemetry is generated, collected and propagated through the system
- Identify gaps in current observability and recommend additional instrumentation where required
- Work with Data/ML Engineers to define a reliable representation of network state over time
Embedded & Edge integration
- Understand the embedded architecture of network nodes, gateways and repeaters
- Analyze interfaces between firmware, radio components, network protocols and telemetry systems
- Support integration of telemetry and experimental instrumentation
- Participate in field deployments and controlled experiments
- Investigate issues that span firmware, radio communication and network behavior
Network simulator
- Analyze the existing network simulator and its architecture
- Determine which network parameters and scenarios can be controlled
- Assess available simulator outputs and telemetry
- Compare simulator behavior with real-world network measurements
- Identify calibration requirements and simulator-to-real-world discrepancies
- Help establish a reliable simulation environment for future experimentation and synthetic data generation
Feasibility & Solution design
- Formulate and evaluate technical hypotheses around: network-state awareness, routing and path optimization, network reliability, degradation prediction, capacity forecasting, predictive maintenance, simulator-based experimentation
- Work with ML Engineers to determine whether a problem is better addressed through ML, optimization, graph algorithms, heuristics or deterministic logic
- Contribute to technical feasibility assessments and implementation recommendations
- Help define implementation-ready technical scopes for promising opportunities

Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in network engineering, network architecture, embedded systems or a closely related field
- Strong understanding of networking protocols and distributed network behavior
- Hands-on experience with wireless networks, mesh networks, IoT or constrained networks
- Experience analyzing network topology, routing, link quality and network capacity
- Strong understanding of RSSI, SNR, packet loss, latency, link quality and radio communication metrics
- Experience working with network telemetry and distributed systems
- Practical experience with embedded systems and/or embedded Linux
- Experience integrating firmware/embedded systems with network and telemetry infrastructure
- Experience with network simulators, emulators or controlled network experiments
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work with incomplete information and reverse-engineer existing systems
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers and non-engineering stakeholders

- LoRa / LoRaWAN experience
- Experience with mesh/ad-hoc/tactical networks
- Experience with constrained wireless networks
- Experience with RF systems or radio telemetry
- Experience with network optimization
- Experience with graph-based network modeling
- Experience working with network simulators or digital twins
- Experience in defense, telecommunications, robotics, IoT or autonomous systems
- Python for network analysis, experimentation and data processing
- Experience collaborating with ML/Data Engineering teams
