PHP Engineer – Payment Gateway

We're looking for an experienced PHP Engineer to join our Payments team and help build, scale, and maintain our payment gateway infrastructure. You'll work on systems that process financial transactions at scale, integrate with banks and payment providers, and ensure the highest standards of reliability, security, and compliance.

What You'll Do

• Design, build, and maintain core payment gateway services in PHP
• Integrate with third-party payment providers, acquiring banks, and card networks (Visa, Mastercard, etc.)
• Implement and maintain support for payment methods such as cards, wallets, bank transfers, and alternative payment methods
• Ensure PCI DSS compliance across the codebase and infrastructure you touch
• Build robust systems for transaction processing, reconciliation, refunds, chargebacks, and settlements
• Optimize for high availability, low latency, and fault tolerance in a distributed system
• Write clean, well-tested, well-documented code and participate in code reviews
• Collaborate closely with QA, DevOps, Product, and Compliance teams
• Monitor production systems, investigate incidents, and improve observability
• Contribute to architectural decisions as the platform scales

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 3+ years of professional experience with PHP (PHP 8.x preferred)
• Strong knowledge of a modern PHP framework (Laravel, Symfony, or similar)
• Experience working with relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) — query optimization, transactions, indexing
• Solid understanding of REST/SOAP APIs and third-party integrations
• Experience with message queues (RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS, or similar)
• Familiarity with payment concepts: authorization, capture, void, refund, chargeback, settlement
• Strong understanding of security best practices (encryption, tokenization, secure key management)
• Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized environments (Docker)
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Nice to Have:

• Direct experience integrating with payment processors (Stripe, Adyen, Worldpay, Braintree, PayPal, etc.)
• Experience with PCI DSS compliance requirements
• Knowledge of fraud detection/prevention systems
• Experience with microservices architecture
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure)
• Understanding of ISO 8583 or other financial messaging standards
• Experience with high-throughput, high-availability systems
