Windows System Engineer (Kiosk Mode Configuration Expert)
Format: Full remote | Full time | Long-term engagement
Location: EU, CIS, Ukraine, Balkans (no citizenship restrictions; Europe region preferred)
About the Project
We are looking for an experienced Windows System Engineer with a strong background in embedded and industrial computing. The mission: configure, harden, and customize Windows for an industrial kiosk-mode product β a locked-down Windows environment running a Unity-based application with custom DLLs and Python services, deployed on an industrial-grade single-board computer (SBC).
Responsibilities
- Own the full OS-level configuration pipeline: from a clean Windows image to a production-ready, field-deployable system
- Configure Windows in kiosk / Shell Launcher mode so the Unity application starts automatically as the sole interactive shell β no user access to the desktop, taskbar, or system UI
- Manage registration, versioning, and the dependency chain of custom DLLs, ensuring correct loading order and compatibility across updates
- Set up Python-based background services as proper Windows services (NSSM, pywin32): auto-start, watchdog recovery, logging, and inter-process communication with the main Unity application
- Tune everything for the hardware constraints and driver ecosystem of the target industrial board: GPIO, serial peripherals, BIOS/UEFI settings, and thermal management
Requirements
- 3β4+ years of proven hands-on experience with Windows kiosk mode configuration
- Deep hands-on experience with Windows 10/11 IoT Enterprise: Shell Launcher v2, Assigned Access, Unified Write Filter (UWF), and Group Policyβbased lockdown
- Strong knowledge of Windows system internals: registry, services architecture, WMI, COM/DCOM, DLL side-by-side loading
- Solid PowerShell scripting skills
- Working knowledge of Python service deployment on Windows (pywin32, virtualenv packaging, dependency isolation)
- Previous experience bringing up and validating Windows images on industrial SBCs or embedded x86 boards (Advantech, Kontron, Beckhoff, or similar vendors)
Knowledge of Windows image creation and deployment: DISM, WinPE, and answer files (unattend.xml) for reproducible, automated provisioning
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Unity runtime requirements on Windows: DirectX dependencies, resolution and display management, crash recovery
- Experience with Windows Autopilot or MDM-based provisioning for fleet deployment
- CI/CD pipelines for OS image building and validation
- Exposure to real-time or deterministic scheduling constraints on Windows
Secure Boot, BitLocker, and TPM configuration on industrial hardware
What You Will Deliver
A fully documented, reproducible Windows image that boots directly into the Unity kiosk application β all DLLs correctly registered, Python services running and monitored, and the system hardened against unintended user interaction and OS updates β ready for volume deployment on the target industrial board.
Important
The client needs someone who can join the project and start configuring the environment almost immediately. There is no time for learning missing technologies or a lengthy onboarding process β the candidate must be productive from day one. Only candidates with proven, practical experience in the required technologies will be considered; the CV must include a clear, detailed description of relevant projects and hands-on Windows kiosk mode configuration experience.
