Product Engineer (Automation, Internal Tools) - US e-commerce domain
CareerOS is hiring on behalf of our employer partner (US e-commerce domain). This is the person who removes roadblocks across the whole company: embed with creative, ops, and leadership, find the manual workflows slowing everyone down, and ship AI-powered tools that kill them. Part engineer, part internal entrepreneur.
About this role
Think of this as an internal-entrepreneur role with an engineer's hands. CareerOS is partnering with a fast-growing direct-to-consumer e-commerce company running two brands -men's hair care and pet wellness, across the US, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and the UK. They run lean and fast, and across the company people lose hours every day to manual, repetitive work: copying prompts between tools, re-uploading assets, pulling ad numbers by hand.
Your job is to find that friction wherever it lives and build it away.
You'll embed with every business unit โ creative, operations, performance marketing, and leadership (including the CFO and CMO) โ learn how they actually work, and turn their biggest bottlenecks into AI-powered tools and automations.
You own the full loop: spot the problem, build the tool, ship it, watch people use it, make it better. No detailed specs and no tickets handed down โ you translate business problems into working software, and you measure success in hours saved and output gained.
This role is for a technical operator who builds internal competitive infrastructure. It's a hands-on building role โ not a strategy-deck role, not research, not "prompt engineering." Real software that real teams depend on.
What you'll do
- Embed with business units โ sit with editors, creative strategists, ops, and marketing to map how they work and find where time is being wasted.
- Build and ship internal tools, continuously โ AI-powered creative-analysis dashboards, automated ad-script generators, workflow tools that replace multi-step manual processes, and integrations that connect existing platforms.
- Automate creative production end-to-end โ extract video structure, analyze winning ad frameworks, generate variations at scale, connect everything via APIs.
- Own each tool through the full loop โ problem โ build โ release โ feedback โ iterate.
- Proactively hunt for the next high-ROI automation across the whole company, beyond whatever's assigned.
What we're looking for
Must have:
- Software engineering background with production experience โ you've shipped products to real users and can maintain and debug ~10 internal tools used by 30+ people.
- Full-stack capability with React and Next.js.
- Experience integrating external APIs and connecting systems together.
- Startup / fast-moving environment experience โ comfortable with ambiguity, you know what questions to ask.
- Strong stakeholder skills โ you gather requirements by talking to non-technical people across the business, not from a ticket board.
- English: Upper-Intermediate or higher (daily work with an English-speaking team).
Nice to have:
- DTC, e-commerce, or performance-marketing experience.
- You've built internal dashboards or tools before.
- Familiarity with ad creative workflows.
Can be learned on the job:
- Specific APIs (OpenAI, Claude, Meta, marketing platforms), AI techniques, and brand/company context.
What this role is NOT
- Not a research or data-science position.
- Not a junior automation role.
- Not "prompt engineering" โ we need someone who builds and maintains real software.
- Not deep ML work (training custom models or building architectures from scratch).
Who you are
- You operate like a founder: you spot a broken process and fix it without being asked.
- You're as comfortable in a spec-less kickoff with the CMO as you are deep in a Next.js codebase.
- You think in systems, bias toward execution, and measure yourself in business outcomes โ hours saved, output, cost โ not lines of code.
- You don't wait for perfect specs; you go from a loosely defined problem to a shipped tool.
Success in your first 6 months
- Ship 2โ3 internal AI-powered tools to production, used by the team daily.
- A measurable increase in creative output speed.
- Demonstrated cost savings through automation.
- Trust earned from internal users by responding fast and fixing issues.
