• Own features end-to-end: from architecture and implementation to deployment and support
• Build and ship web applications using Ruby on Rails
  Design and maintain APIs, services, and data layers (PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq)
• Deploy and operate services on AWS with Docker
• Write clean, well-tested code with RSpec                                         
• Communicate with the CTO and client-side engineering team directly — no layers in between
• Use AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) as part of your daily workflow
• Work across diverse projects — different domains, different challenges    

What We're Looking For
 

• 4+ years of professional backend or full-stack development experience
• Strong Ruby and Rails skills (Rails 6+)
• Solid hands-on experience building RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs
• Production experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, AWS, Docker
• Familiarity with frontend basics (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) — enough to work with Hotwire/Turbo or integrate with a JS frontend

The role:
You'll be picking up tickets that span our entire stack: Rails API, Next.js frontend, and infrastructure config, and shipping complete solutions without someone else catching what you missed. This is not a "build a component and hand it off" role. You own the ticket from read to deploy.
 

Our team is three people: a technical lead, a frontend/payments developer, and a QA engineer. We move fast, we communicate asynchronously in Linear, and we expect clean PRs with clear descriptions. If you're someone who reads half the ticket and ships half the solution, this isn't the right fit.
 

What you'll work on:
- Feature development across Rails and Next.js (new quiz features, student-facing tools, admin functionality)
- Bug fixes that touch multiple layers: a single ticket might involve an Nginx config change, a Rails controller update, and a Next.js page fix
- Infrastructure work as we migrate hosting to Render
- Security hardening and deployment pipeline improvements 
- Writing tests and catching your own edge cases before QA does

What we're looking for: 
- 5+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails and 3+  years of professional experience React/Next.js 
- Deployed to managed PaaS platforms: Render, Vercel, Railway, or similar. We're not looking for someone whose only deployment experience is SSH-ing into a VPS. 
- AI-native workflow. You should be using Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools as a core part of how you write code, not as an occasional convenience. We'll ask you to demonstrate this. 
- Clean communication. You read the full ticket. You ask clarifying questions before you start, not after you've shipped something incomplete. Your PR descriptions explain what changed and why.
