Senior Backend Engineer (Python)

StairwaySoft is an Israeli-Ukrainian engineering provider of custom software solutions for SMBs and startups. We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a product team building a compliance and business verification platform for financial institutions and fintech companies.

The product helps regulated businesses verify companies, process business data, and automate compliance workflows using real-time data and AI-driven automation. The platform operates in a security-sensitive environment where reliability, performance, and data quality are critical.
 

Responsibilities:

• Design and develop customer-facing REST APIs and supporting documentation
• Build and own backend services from architecture through implementation and production support
• Develop secure and reliable data ingestion and processing pipelines
• Build scraping and parsing components for collecting and structuring external data
• Design backend systems with scalability, resilience, and performance in mind
• Work with asynchronous processing, queues, pub/sub, retries, idempotency, and eventual consistency
• Monitor how features perform in production and improve them based on real usage and customer feedback
• Contribute to engineering standards, technical decisions, and development practices
• Work closely with product and other stakeholders to understand problems and deliver practical solutions

Requirements:

• 5+ years of commercial backend engineering experience
• 3+ years of experience with Python, or strong experience with a similar backend language and willingness to work primarily in Python
• Strong experience designing and maintaining REST APIs
• Experience owning backend systems end-to-end in production
• Good understanding of distributed systems and asynchronous processing
• Strong experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Solid knowledge of data modelling, indexing, query optimization, and schema evolution
• Experience working with cloud environments such as GCP, AWS, or Azure
• Experience with CI/CD and production deployments
• Strong product mindset and ability to understand the business problem behind a technical task
• Upper-Intermediate English proficiency

Would be a strong advantage:

• Experience building web scrapers at scale
• Experience in fintech, KYC/AML, fraud, compliance, or other regulated domains
• Experience with high-throughput data pipelines or stream processing
• Experience with Kafka, Pub/Sub, Dataflow, or Flink
• Experience with Rust, Go, or C++ for performance-critical components
