Head of Payments
We're looking for a Head of Payments who will drive revenue growth through payment infrastructure, billing logic, and optimization of the payment experience.
It's a player-coach role: you'll dive into the architecture and work closely with the team to understand exactly how the payment system works end-to-end, staying hands-on enough that nothing is a black box.
From there, you'll drive the company's growth into its next stage across Tier 1-2 markets - with full ownership of strategy, infrastructure, PSP and acquiring relationships, payment performance, risk, and payment economics.
The infrastructure already exists, so the mandate isn't to start from zero: it's to take a working multi-PSP orchestration setup and grow it into a Billing-as-a-Service platform, with direct influence on how Payments looks as a mature business function.
Responsibilities:
- Own and evolve the company's payment strategy, balancing revenue growth, retention, payment performance, and scalability
- Own the payment infrastructure end-to-end: multi-PSP setup, acquiring strategy, orchestration, routing, MID portfolio, and processing resilience
- Drive subscription billing performance - approval rate, renewal performance, failed payment recovery, and involuntary churn
- Manage PSP and acquirer relationships: onboarding, commercial negotiations, performance management, and escalations
- Own payment economics - processing cost, provider mix, and routing efficiency - balancing conversion, cost, and risk
- Manage the payment risk profile: fraud, chargebacks, refunds, disputes, and compliance with PSP/card scheme monitoring programs (VAMP, SMMP)
- Build Payments into a mature, self-sufficient function: team structure, ownership model, reporting, monitoring, and automation
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, Growth, Billing Engineering, Finance, and Legal on any initiative where payments affect revenue, scalability, or risk
- Lead and grow the Payments team, including introducing AI tools and automation into support workflows.
What we look for:
- 5+ years of experience in payments, acquiring, billing, or payment operations on the merchant side, in B2C
- Hands-on experience with subscription payments: initial charges, renewals, retries, dunning, and failed payment recovery
- Experience building or significantly scaling multi-PSP/multi-acquirer infrastructure - routing, orchestration, cascading, failover, MID strategy
- Track record of direct PSP and acquirer negotiations: evaluation, onboarding, underwriting, commercial terms, and escalation management
- Demonstrated, quantifiable impact on approval rate, renewal rate, or recovery rate - able to walk through before/after numbers
- Strong understanding of payment risk: chargebacks, fraud, disputes, and card scheme monitoring programs
- Experience managing a team and building processes from the ground up
- Experience operating across international, multi-product/multi-entity setups
- Upper-Intermediate English or higher.
We offer:
- Full ownership of the Payments function: strategy, infrastructure, PSPs/acquiring, payment performance, risk, and payment economics
- Direct impact on revenue, retention, and risk, with close collaboration with founders and C-level leadership
- High autonomy in decision-making: the freedom to choose approaches, prioritize initiatives, and shape the Payments roadmap
- The opportunity to build and scale the Payments function, evolving it into a mature, autonomous business unit
- A broad scope to scale payment infrastructure across multiple products, markets, legal entities, and PSPs, making the role both technically complex and strategically interesting
- Room to grow strategically: from hands-on ownership to driving provider strategy, market expansion, and payment unit economics.
