It is a mobile accounting app for sole traders, freelancers and self-employed workers — income, expenses and tax handled from a phone in minutes rather than evenings.

A social app that ships a bug annoys people. We ship a rounding error and someone files an incorrect tax return. Our users have no way of independently checking whether our number is right — they trust it. That trust is what you're protecting.

The job in one line

You own quality: nothing reaches the stores without your sign-off, and you're the person who asks "what happens at the tax year boundary?" before a user finds out.

What you'll do

- Test the money, not just the screens. Design and run test cases for the calculation logic: income and expense totals, VAT, allowable expenses, tax estimates, rounding, negative amounts, refunds, part-period and tax-year-boundary cases, 5 April / 6 April transitions. Correctness of figures is the first priority in this product, above everything else.
- Own release sign-off. Maintain the regression suite for critical user journeys (onboarding, bank connection, expense capture, tax summary, subscription), run it every release, and hold the go/no-go decision on quality grounds. Target: zero critical or high-severity defects escaping to production per release.
- Cover the device reality. Test across an agreed iOS and Android device and OS matrix, including older devices, small screens, offline mode, flaky connectivity and interrupted background sync — the conditions our users are actually in, on site or in a van.
- Test the integrations. Bank feeds / Open Banking connections, receipt scanning, App Store and Google Play subscription flows, and the API layer beneath them (Postman / REST clients) using sandbox environments and controlled test data.
- Write bugs people can act on. Steps, environment, device, app version, expected vs actual, evidence, severity and priority that mean something. Track them through to verified fix and closure in Jira / Linear.
- Automate what earns it. Automate the regression paths that are run every release (Appium / Detox / Maestro / Playwright — or propose the stack), integrate into CI, and keep the suite green and trusted. We'd rather have 20 reliable tests than 200 flaky ones.
- Test before code exists. Review requirements and designs, ask the awkward questions early, and define acceptance criteria with Product and Engineering. Most defects here are cheaper to prevent than to find.
- Guard the test data. No real user financial data in test environments. Build and maintain realistic synthetic datasets, and work within UK GDPR when handling anything that came from production.
- Report quality honestly. Escaped defects per release, regression pass rate, crash-free session rate, reopened bug ratio, coverage of critical flows. Say when a release isn't ready — including when the date is inconvenient.

What we're looking for

- 3+ years in QA for a live software product, including hands-on mobile testing on both iOS and Android.
- Demonstrable rigour with numeric or financial logic — you build boundary and edge cases systematically rather than clicking around and hoping.
- API testing experience (Postman / curl) and comfort reading a JSON response and a log.
- Solid bug reporting and test case discipline, with real experience of a release process and sign-off.
- Some automation experience, or the clear ability and appetite to build it.
- Written English precise enough that a developer in another timezone can reproduce your bug from the ticket alone.
- Willing to say "no, this isn't ready" to people more senior than you.
 

Nice to have

- Fintech, accounting, payroll or tax software background; or personal familiarity with Self Assessment, VAT, MTD.
- Experience testing subscription billing and store purchase flows (RevenueCat or similar).
- Performance, accessibility or localisation testing.
- SQL for verifying data directly, and any scripting (Python / JS).
- CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions / Bitrise / Fastlane).
- ISTQB certification or equivalent structured testing training.
