Lead Software Engineer (Backend)

We are looking for an experienced Development Lead to manage a team of 3–6 backend engineers within our New Ventures product track. The team tests product hypotheses, iterates on ideas with demonstrated demand, and develops successful concepts into scalable products.
You will own the team’s delivery, technical direction, engineering quality, and people management. The role combines approximately 70% leadership and management with 30% hands-on technical work, reports directly to the CTO, and works closely with the Product Lead.

Responsibilities:

• Own the team’s delivery, ensuring committed work is completed on time and at the required quality
• Turn product ideas and partially defined business problems into clear technical scope and deliverable work
• Lead the design and development of backend services using Go
• Own architecture decisions and system design within the team’s domain
• Work with the Product Lead on hypothesis testing, product iteration, and scaling validated products
• Own and improve planning, work allocation, technical review, and release processes
• Manage 3–6 engineers, including goals, 1-on-1s, feedback, performance reviews, and improvement plans
• Plan team capacity, identify hiring needs, and participate in hiring and onboarding
• Mentor engineers and support their professional growth
• Maintain standards for code quality, testing, code review, logging, monitoring, and alerting
• Maintain a visible technical-debt backlog and allocate capacity to address it
• Ensure production incidents are handled and followed up effectively
• Coordinate shared systems and integrations with engineering and infrastructure teams
• Maintain technical documentation in Jira and Confluence

Experience and skills:

• Strong hands-on backend development experience using Go
• Experience leading and directly managing software engineers
• Proven ownership of team delivery from planning through production release
• Experience with goals, 1-on-1s, feedback, performance management, resource planning, and hiring
• Proven ability to design scalable, resilient, and maintainable backend systems
• Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems, APIs, and performance optimization
• Ability to make pragmatic technical decisions and communicate trade-offs clearly
• Experience with evolving requirements, product experimentation, or early-stage product development
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Docker, Linux, and cloud infrastructure
• Experience building CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
• Ability to write clear technical documentation
• Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder-management skills

Nice to have:

• Hands-on experience with PHP
• Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, and GitOps
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible
• Experience building high-load or distributed systems
• Experience developing products from validation through production scaling
• Experience in startup, venture-building, or product experimentation environments
