Linux Engineer

to $5000

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR?

We are seeking a highly skilled Linux Engineer to join our team, working on our innovative edge computing platform. As part of a cross-functional DevOps group, your primary focus will be managing on-premise edge infrastructure, ensuring the reliability of containerized applications, and designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines, while also extending some workloads to AWS as needed (but not required).

The platform currently runs on NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Raspberry Pi 5 devices. We are expanding our supported hardware line, so a core part of this role is researching and evaluating new edge-compute hardware candidates and porting or adapting the platform to run on them โ€” working closely with hardware vendors, product, and engineering stakeholders to make build-vs-buy and platform-fit decisions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. On-Premise Infrastructure Provisioning & Configuration Management

  • Use Ansible to automate the configuration and deployment of servers, networking, and storage.

2. Hardware Platform Research & Enablement (New)

  • Assess and score candidate hardware against a standard set of criteria โ€” compute/GPU capability, expansion options (storage, ethernet, PCIe/M.2, wireless/LTE), carrier board availability, cost, vendor relationship and supply chain risk, architecture (ARM vs. x86), target vertical fit, and third-party licensing constraints.
  • Port and adapt the platform to new hardware targets, including OS/kernel bring-up, driver and peripheral enablement, and validation of Nomad/Consul/Ansible workflows on the new devices.

3. Container Orchestration & Deployment

  • Use HashiCorp Nomad to deploy and scale containerized applications on on-premise edge nodes.

4. Distributed Storage & Data Management

  • Work with a distributed file system (SeaweedFS) to ensure high availability, replication, and fault tolerance.
  • Implement best practices for data redundancy, security, and efficient data access.

5. CI/CD Pipeline Development

  • Design, implement, and maintain robust GitLab CI/CD pipelines for containerized applications.
  • Continuously refine automation workflows for software build, test, and deployment stages.

6. Collaboration & Communication

  • Work alongside existing infrastructure, DevOps, and Developer teams to identify areas of process improvement and lead automation initiatives.

WHAT YOU BRING ALONG

  • Upper-Intermediate English level.
  • 10+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering roles, with a track record of end-to-end project delivery.
  • Expert knowledge of Linux systems administration (networking, security, and performance tuning).
  • Networking expertise: extensive experience with VPN, SDN, mDNS, and related tools for secure, resilient communication in distributed environments.
  • Configuration management experience with Ansible.
  • Strong scripting skills in Bash and Python for automation tasks.
  • Working knowledge of embedded/single-board and edge-compute hardware (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi) โ€” CPU/GPU/memory sizing, storage and networking expansion, and peripheral bring-up.
  • Comfort evaluating hardware across different architectures (ARM, x86) and reasoning about the portability impact of an architecture change.
  • Basic understanding of hardware sourcing considerations: carrier board ecosystems, unit/BOM cost trade-offs, vendor relationships, and supply chain risk.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization tools (Docker) and orchestration platforms (HashiCorp Nomad preferred, or Kubernetes).
  • Practical experience with HashiCorp Consul for service discovery and configuration management, particularly in conjunction with Nomad-based deployments.
  • Proven ability to design and implement CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab CI (preferred), Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
  • Familiarity with distributed storage (SeaweedFS preferred, Ceph) and replication strategies for high availability and data redundancy.
  • Experience setting up and deploying relational databases (PostgreSQL and cluster configuration for high availability and scalability preferred).
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment: on-site for hardware setup and troubleshooting when needed, and remote for the majority of development work.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

WILL BE A PLUS

  • Networking expertise: Nebula for secure peer-to-peer communication or any other SDN.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) for performance tracking and alerting at scale.
  • Prior hands-on hardware evaluation/selection experience, e.g., benchmarking or qualifying new edge-compute boards for a product line.
  • Experience with board bring-up or board support package (BSP) integration on embedded Linux devices.
  • MLOps knowledge, including model deployment and lifecycle management at scale.
  • IoT experience, particularly in device management, data ingestion, and security considerations.
  • Experience deploying and managing workloads in AWS (e.g., EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, ECS/EKS).
  • Proficiency with Terraform as an IaC tool to provision and manage both on-premise infrastructure and AWS cloud services.
  • Direct experience engaging with hardware vendors/OEMs on partnership, sampling, or supply agreements.
  • Certifications in HashiCorp technologies, AWS certifications, or Linux administration.
  • Background in large-scale distributed systems or edge computing deployments.
  • Basic electronic skills (SPI, I2C), device assembling and soldering.

SOFT SKILLS

  • Adaptability to rapidly changing requirements and a willingness to explore emerging technologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication abilities.
  • Curiosity and rigor when researching, benchmarking, and making the case for new hardware options.
  • Self-learning.
