Senior Android Developer
About Archysoft
Archysoft is a software development company with over 10 years of experience delivering solutions to clients across the United States and Western Europe.
We are looking for a Senior Android Developer to maintain and further develop a mature native Android application for managing Bluetooth-enabled devices. The product also includes encrypted chats, audio and video calls, media integrations, and a Wear OS companion application.
This is a hands-on maintenance and feature-development role within a large production codebase built primarily with Kotlin, Java, RxJava 3, XML, ViewBinding, and a custom BLE stack.
The core requirement for this position is practical commercial experience combining:
- Android BLE;
- RxJava/RxAndroid;
- the classic Android View system: XML, ViewBinding, and custom views.
The main application uses RxJava 3 rather than Coroutines/Flow as its primary reactive stack. Jetpack Compose is currently used only in the Wear OS application. This is an established legacy product, not a greenfield Compose project or a full application rewrite.
In this role, you will
- Maintain and further develop a mature native Android application;
- Investigate crashes and production issues using Firebase Crashlytics;
- Implement new features and support new Android versions and devices;
- Work with a custom BLE protocol stack across several generations of physical devices;
- Work with BLE scanning, GATT services and characteristics, and read/write/notify operations;
- Improve connection management, reconnect logic, connection stability, background operation, and foreground services;
- Support DFU/OTA firmware updates;
- Maintain WebRTC audio and video calls, real-time chats, encrypted data storage, and the Wear OS companion application;
- Support Media3/ExoPlayer and Spotify integrations;
- Manage releases through Google Play, Firebase App Distribution, and alternative distribution channels;
- Support different product flavors, regional builds, and white-label configurations;
- Update dependencies, improve legacy code, reduce technical debt, and introduce unit tests;
- Participate in code reviews and collaborate with development and QA teams.
Required experience and skills
- 5+ years of commercial native Android development experience;
- Strong Senior-level ownership and the ability to work independently with a large production codebase;
- Expert knowledge of Kotlin;
- Ability to read, understand, and modify production Java code;
- Strong hands-on commercial experience with RxJava, preferably RxJava 3, including RxAndroid;
- Strong practical knowledge of the classic Android View system: XML layouts, ViewBinding, and custom views;
- Practical commercial Android BLE experience;
- Experience with GATT services and characteristics, including read/write/notify operations;
- Experience with BLE connection management, reconnect logic, background restrictions, foreground services, and connection stability;
- Experience with Hilt or Dagger 2;
- Experience with Room and Android Navigation Component;
- Experience maintaining large multi-module Gradle projects;
- Understanding of build variants, product flavors, and complex build configurations;
- Experience with the Google Play release lifecycle;
- Experience maintaining and debugging production applications;
- Ability to investigate issues and make technical decisions without constant supervision;
- English level B2 or higher.
As a plus
- RxAndroidBle or similar BLE libraries;
- OTA/DFU experience, including Realtek/RealSil or similar solutions;
- WebRTC, audio/video calls, and audio-routing experience;
- Wear OS and Jetpack Compose experience;
- End-to-end encryption, Olm/Matrix, or SQLCipher;
- Media3, ExoPlayer, or MediaSession;
- GitLab CI and fastlane;
- Firebase App Distribution;
- Experience distributing Android applications outside Google Play;
- Experience supporting applications for the Chinese market.
