Senior Flutter developer
Workload: Full-time
Duration: Long-term (6+ months)
Location: Remote (Worldwide, except RF)
Rate: Up to 20 USD/hour
About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Flutter Engine Developer to join a long-term project focused on enhancing the Flutter framework itself, rather than building Flutter applications.
This is a low-level engineering role involving modifications to the Flutter engine, including Windowing API, Multi-View support, and deep integration with native Android and iOS platforms. The ideal candidate has an in-depth understanding of Flutter internals, rendering, platform embedding, and native mobile architecture.
If your experience is primarily limited to Flutter application development, this role is not the right fit.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement changes to the Flutter engine and framework.
- Work on core Flutter functionality, including Windowing API and Multi-View architecture.
- Develop and maintain native platform integrations for Android and iOS.
- Contribute to low-level engine components written in C++.
- Collaborate with platform engineers to improve Flutter runtime capabilities.
- Analyze and optimize performance, rendering, and platform interoperability.
- Debug complex issues across Flutter, Android, and iOS layers.
- Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to the evolution of the Flutter engine.
Required Skills
- Extensive commercial experience with Flutter and Dart.
- Deep understanding of the Flutter Engine and Flutter framework internals.
- Strong proficiency in C++.
- Experience with Java and/or Kotlin for Android development.
- Experience with Swift for iOS development.
- Strong knowledge of Android platform architecture and native APIs.
- Strong knowledge of iOS platform architecture and native APIs.
- Experience working with rendering pipelines, platform embedding, or engine-level development.
- Excellent debugging and performance optimization skills.
- Strong understanding of cross-platform mobile architecture.
- Fluent English.
Nice to Have
- Experience contributing to the Flutter open-source project.
- Experience modifying or maintaining rendering engines or SDKs.
- Familiarity with graphics technologies such as Skia, OpenGL, Metal, or Vulkan.
- Experience with platform-specific window management or multi-window applications.
- Contributions to open-source mobile frameworks.
What We're Looking For
- An engineer who understands how Flutter works internally, not just how to build apps with it.
- Someone comfortable working across multiple programming languages and platform layers.
- Strong ownership, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently on complex technical challenges.
- Passion for systems-level and framework development.
Important Note
This position focuses on Flutter Engine development, not Flutter application development.
Candidates should have proven experience working with Flutter internals, including engine-level components, platform embedding, or framework modifications. Experience limited to building mobile applications with Flutter is unlikely to be sufficient for this role.
