Tech Lead – WooCommerce / WordPress Development

We are looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to guide our client's WooCommerce and WordPress development team.

This role combines technical leadership, architecture ownership, delivery planning, developer mentoring, and hands-on development. The ideal candidate has strong PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce expertise, practical experience leading development teams, and the ability to balance business needs, technical quality, and delivery timelines. E-commerce domain.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architecture

Approximately one-third of this role will focus on technical decisions and architecture design.

• Own key technical decisions for our WordPress and WooCommerce platforms.
• Design scalable, maintainable, and secure architecture for e-commerce websites serving international cosmetic markets.
• Evaluate technical trade-offs and recommend practical solutions aligned with business goals.
• Define engineering standards, development workflows, and best practices.
• Improve platform performance, security, stability, and maintainability.
• Guide technical direction for integrations, custom plugins, themes, checkout flows, product catalog features, and third-party services.

Delivery Planning & Team Enablement

Approximately one-third of this role will focus on helping PMs plan work, prioritize tasks, estimate effort, and mentor developers.

• Work closely with Product Managers to break down business requirements into clear technical tasks.
• Support task prioritization by providing technical input, effort estimates, risk assessments, and dependency analysis.
• Help plan development milestones, release scopes, and delivery timelines.
• Mentor developers through technical guidance, pairing, and constructive feedback.
• Support team productivity by removing technical blockers and improving development processes.
• Collaborate with QAs, web admins, and PMs to ensure smooth delivery and operational quality.

Hands-on Development & Code Quality

Approximately one-third of this role will focus on coding, critical issue resolution, code reviews, and improving internal quality.

• Develop critical features and complex WooCommerce / WordPress functionality.
• Lead root cause analysis for critical production issues and drive long-term fixes.
• Review code regularly to ensure quality, maintainability, performance, and security.
• Improve internal code quality, technical debt, testability, documentation, and development standards.
• Build and maintain custom plugins, themes, APIs, integrations, and backend workflows.
• Ensure releases are stable, well-tested, and aligned with agreed engineering practices.

Required Qualifications

• Strong professional experience with PHP, WordPress, and WooCommerce development.
• Proven experience leading or mentoring developers in a production development environment.
• Deep understanding of WordPress hooks, filters, plugin architecture, theme development, and WooCommerce customization.
• Experience building or maintaining custom WooCommerce features, checkout flows, product catalog logic, payment/shipping integrations, or order management workflows.
• Strong ability to estimate technical effort, identify risks, and translate business requirements into technical implementation plans.
• Solid understanding of software architecture, code quality, performance optimization, security best practices, and maintainability.
• Experience with debugging, root cause analysis, and production issue resolution.
• Comfortable reviewing code and setting engineering standards.
• Experience working in Scrum, Agile, or iterative delivery environments, with practical knowledge of TDD, automated testing, or test-driven engineering practices.
• Good communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work effectively as a full-time contractor in a retainer-based engagement model.

Preferred Qualifications

• AI-related experience is strongly preferred, including using AI tools to improve development workflows, code quality, QA, automation, documentation, or productivity.
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools, AI-powered testing, workflow automation, prompt engineering, or integrating AI features into web products.
• Experience with international or multi-market e-commerce platforms.
• Experience with cosmetic, beauty, retail, or consumer product websites.
• Familiarity with multilingual, multicurrency, regional pricing, tax, shipping, and compliance requirements.
• Experience with REST APIs, third-party integrations, CRM, ERP, inventory, marketing automation, or analytics tools.
• Experience with performance optimization for high-traffic WooCommerce websites.
• Familiarity with CI/CD, Git workflows, staging environments, automated testing, and deployment processes.
• Knowledge of frontend technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, or modern WordPress block development.
• Experience managing part-time freelancers or external development resources.
