SQL Server Migration Engineer

🚀 Project Overview: 

We are looking for a SQL Server Migration Specialist to join a modernization project for a long-running business-critical legacy system used by a cabinet manufacturing company.

The system has been in production for more than 20 years and supports order tracking and internal business workflows. As part of the first phase of a larger modernization initiative, the focus is on migrating the existing Microsoft Access backend to SQL Server while maintaining business continuity and system stability.

You will work closely with our Tech Lead, client-side Product Owner and Technical Consultant to assess the existing solution, plan the migration, execute the transition and address performance and compatibility challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze the existing Microsoft Access application, database structure, and business workflows;
• Migrate Microsoft Access/Jet databases to SQL Server using industry best practices and migration tools;
• Design and optimize SQL Server schemas, indexes, and queries;
• Support and optimize Access frontends connected to SQL Server through ODBC;
• Troubleshoot performance issues related to Access-over-ODBC applications;
• Validate migrated data and ensure data integrity throughout the migration process;
• Prepare and execute migration, cutover, and rollback plans;
• Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle;
• Identify technical risks and propose mitigation strategies;
   

About you: 

• Proven commercial experience with Microsoft Access development;
• Strong knowledge of VBA, forms/subforms, DAO recordsets, linked tables, and query design;
• Hands-on experience migrating Microsoft Access/Jet backends to SQL Server;
• Strong T-SQL skills and understanding of SQL Server administration fundamentals;
• Experience working with ODBC-linked Access applications;
• Practical knowledge of pass-through queries, updatable views, concurrency handling, and record locking;
• Experience troubleshooting and optimizing Access applications connected to SQL Server;
• Experience working with production business systems and migration planning;
• Ability to work independently and drive technical decisions;
• Upper-Intermediate (B2) English or higher;

Nice to have:

• Experience with Windows Server or Citrix environments;
• Experience with SQL Server High Availability solutions;
• Experience with Kepware, OPC, PLC integrations, or industrial automation systems;
• Manufacturing, ERP, order management, or workflow system domain experience;
• Previous involvement in legacy system modernization projects;

• Project Type: 2-month contract with possible extension. 
• Team Size: Tech Lead + Account manager on our side, PO and tech consultant on client side
• Working Hours: Regular Eastern Europe working hours
