I run a US-based cleaning company - 20 years, 30 employees, about $2M in revenue. I'm not a developer by background, but over the last 4 months I built a real, working AI system for my own business using Claude Code, and it's live today handling real customer leads every day.
It works well enough that I'm now building a company around it: we build AI "digital employees" - custom agents that do real work for service businesses. I'm looking for the engineer to own the technical side with me and grow into running the tech team.
What already exists (live in production today)
I built all of this myself with Claude Code in about 4 months, with no coding background:
- A custom quote calculator, built from scratch, that generates accurate estimates for the business
- Multi-channel lead capture (website, Yelp, Google Local Services, and more) with retry and backstop, so no lead is ever lost, even when something breaks
- AI-drafted replies to customers using Claude (Opus and Sonnet), with a human-in-the-loop review dashboard before anything goes out
- Live per-message cost tracking with one-click model switching
- Real integrations with the tools the business uses: Jobber, Gmail, Telegram
- Node.js serverless on Vercel, with Upstash Redis for storage
It tells you two things: I'm serious, and I build with AI instead of the old way.
How we build (read this part carefully)
We build with AI first. Claude Code writes the code. You direct it, read it, check it, and harden the parts that matter. This is not a backup plan or a "nice to have." It is how we work, and the only way we work.
What you'll do
- Take what I built and make it solid enough to run for paying clients, not just for me.
- Build and deploy custom AI agents - digital employees - for service businesses. We start with HVAC and plumbing, but that's our first market, not our only one.
- Build reusable components so launching a new client is fast, instead of starting from zero each time
- Build new kinds of agents as clients show us what they need: agents that answer phone calls, handle quoting, scheduling, follow-up, whatever moves the needle
- Join video calls with real customers and represent the company with me. Over time you'll own more of the customer relationships while I focus on our biggest clients.
- Hire and run your own developers as we grow. I need you genuinely strong at leading people, because the plan is for you to build and then run the tech team.
I bring the business side: customers, sales, and knowing how service businesses actually run. You own the technical side. This is early enough that your decisions shape the whole company.
Who I'm looking for
- 5+ years building real software that real people used, ideally some of it for US clients
- You build with AI first. Claude Code, Cursor, or similar are your primary tools, and you ship FAR faster than you did two years ago.
- Real production experience with LLM-based systems. You know where they fail, how to catch it, and you care about cost.
- Strong with Node.js and serverless. Comfortable integrating with other companies' tools through their APIs - a real part of this job.
- You take customer data seriously and build securely.
- You've led developers before and you're good at it, or you're clearly ready to step up. This role grows into running a team, and that matters to me.
- Comfortable on video calls with English-speaking customers. Good spoken English is important here.
- 4 to 5 hours of daily overlap with US Pacific time.
Not a fit if
- You believe real code has to be written by hand
- You want to plan and architect for days before building anything simple
- You look down on serverless, simple tools, or building with AI
- You only want to manage people and not build, or only build and never deal with people or customers
Pay and terms
- $7,000 to $9,500 USD per month, paid through Wise. Straight salary, no games.
- I cover all software and AI tokens you need to do the work.
- 30-day paid trial, both ways, so we each find out if it's a fit before committing long-term.
