About the Role
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Chapter Lead (PHP) to join our backend team. In this role, you will take ownership of driving technical excellence, architecture, including registration, attendee management, event websites, AI matchmaking, networking tools, and lead intelligence. You will mentor engineers, lead cross-team initiatives, and shape the long-term direction of our platform’s architecture, developer experience, and quality practices. The ideal candidate will bring deep PHP and backend architecture expertise, strong technical leadership and mentorship experience, and a proven track record of designing scalable, maintainable, and high-performing systems.

Role Responsibilities

• Define and evolve platform-wide architecture standards and long-term technical vision
• Lead technical design and review processes for high-impact initiatives
• Identify and mitigate risks in scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability
• Establish and maintain coding, design, and testing standards across teams
• Improve CI/CD, code review templates, test automation, and observability practices
• Drive adoption of AI tools (assistants, agents, copilots) and ensure they are thoughtfully integrated into engineering workflows to boost productivity, code quality, and operational efficiency
• Mentor engineers to grow their architectural thinking, technical capabilities, and effective use of AI-powered solutions
• Collaborate with Product Owners, QA, DevOps, and Design to ensure quality and performance from the start
• Align with other Staff Engineers to standardize approaches and avoid duplication
• Support Engineering Managers in elevating technical practices within their teams
   

Required Experience

• 10+ years in software engineering, backend development, or infrastructure
• Deep expertise in PHP and backend architecture
• Proven experience in technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-team influence
• Strong understanding of scalable, maintainable, and high-performing systems
• Excellent English communication skills (C1+)
   

Nice to Have

• Experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP) and CI/CD pipelines
• Hands-on knowledge of microservices, event-driven architecture, and APIs
• Familiarity with frontend technologies to facilitate cross-team collaboration
• Experience in high-load, high-availability systems
