Database Administrator (Aurora MySQL Specialist)

The Role:
As Nuxgame continues to lead in providing innovative B2B iGaming solutions globally, the reliability and performance of our underlying database infrastructure are paramount. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Administrator, specializing in AWS Aurora MySQL, to become a key part of our core infrastructure team. Your primary mission will be to design, manage, optimize, and safeguard our complex Aurora MySQL 'server forest', ensuring exceptional availability, scalability, and security for the platforms that drive our clients' success. You will work closely with talented development teams (using PHP/Laravel), platform engineers, and data specialists, ensuring seamless database operations and integration with critical systems like Kafka and Redis within our extensive AWS environment. This is a key role where your expertise will directly contribute to the stability and performance of Nuxgame's cutting-edge iGaming products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer, monitor, maintain, and optimize our AWS Aurora MySQL database clusters (including Provisioned and Serverless instances).
- Manage database infrastructure using the AWS RDS console, CLI, and APIs.
- Perform proactive and reactive performance tuning, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and configuration adjustments (parameter groups).
- Implement, test, and manage robust backup, recovery (including point-in-time recovery), and high-availability strategies specific to Aurora MySQL.
- Ensure database security best practices are implemented and maintained (encryption, access control, network security).
- Develop scripts (primarily Python) for automating routine database tasks, monitoring, and alerting.
- Collaborate closely with development teams (using PHP/Laravel) to optimize database interactions and schema design.
- Work with operations teams to ensure seamless integration within our AWS infrastructure.
- Diagnose and resolve complex database performance issues, connectivity problems, and data integrity incidents.
- Manage and optimize integrations between Aurora MySQL and other systems like Redis (caching) and Kafka (messaging/data streaming).
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation regarding database configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical database issues (if applicable).
- Potentially mentor junior team members.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience working as a Senior Database Administrator, with a strong focus on managing MySQL and/or AWS Aurora MySQL environments in production.
- Advanced expertise in SQL, specifically within the MySQL/Aurora dialect.
- Deep understanding and hands-on experience with AWS RDS and the specific features, capabilities, and limitations of Aurora MySQL (Provisioned and Serverless).
- Demonstrable experience in performance tuning, optimization (query analysis, indexing, caching), high availability configurations, and backup/recovery techniques for MySQL/Aurora.
- Strong familiarity with microservices architecture principles.
- Hands-on experience implementing and managing caching solutions with Redis.
- Proficiency in scripting languages, particularly Python, for automation and system integration.
- Solid understanding of managing databases within the AWS ecosystem (RDS, EC2, S3, CloudWatch, IAM, VPC).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- AWS Certified Database - Specialty certification or other relevant MySQL/Aurora certifications.
- Experience managing multi-cluster environments ("server forests") or Aurora Global Databases.
- Familiarity with distributed messaging systems like Kafka.
- Working knowledge of PHP, sufficient to understand application interactions with the database (experience with Laravel framework is a plus).
- Understanding of compliance requirements relevant to the iGaming industry.
- Experience working within an Agile development framework.
- Familiarity with container orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
