About Alter

Alter is an AI-powered self-discovery platform where self-knowledge begins. We use voice sessions, journaling, and personalized practices to help people understand themselves deeply and achieve their goals by uncovering the beliefs and values that shape their lives.

This is our first engineering hire. You'll work directly with the CTO, building the core product that thousands of people use to transform their relationship with themselves.

What You'll Build

• Mobile app (React Native): Rebuild our iOS app from the ground up in React Native and expand to Android.
• Web funnels: Build onboarding flows and landing pages using Next.js/App Router/SSR, and TypeScript. Integrate custom payment providers and analytics.
• Backend: Extend and maintain Firebase Cloud Functions. Over time, help architect a migration path toward dedicated backend services.
• AI-powered features: Build voice and text-based agents. Develop personalized content recommendation and production systems powered by AI.

Requirements

Must have:

• 4+ years of professional experience in full stack development
• Strong React Native experience - shipped at least one production app professionally (not side projects). Familiar with Expo, Reanimated, and React Navigation, Web Sockets.
• Proficiency in TypeScript and modern JavaScript
• Experience with Next.js (App Router, SSR)
• Understanding of mobile UI/UX principles and platform conventions (Apple HIG, Material Design)
• Product mindset - you ask "why are we building this" and "how do we measure success" before asking "how do I build it." You challenge scope when there's a faster path to the same outcome. You flag technical risks and corner cases early.
• AI-augmented development workflow - you use tools like Cursor, Claude Code, Codex as part of how you build, not just for occasional prompts. You understand how to parallelize tasks, have AI test its own work, and structure codebases and documentation for AI readability. If you're not there yet but eager to learn, we'll teach you.
• Fluent English communication

Strong plus:

• Experience building AI agents (voice or text-based)
• Background in consumer apps with high user engagement
• Experience with analytics platforms (Amplitude, Mixpanel) and attribution (Meta Pixel, AppsFlyer)
• Familiarity with Firebase ecosystem (Firestore, Cloud Functions, Auth, Storage)
