Senior Backend Engineer — TypeScript / Node.js

The team develops and operates the services behind sign-in for millions of users: identity, authentication, authorisation and personalisation, built to be secure, scalable and highly available. 

Key responsibilities: 

• Service Development: Design, build and maintain secure, scalable backend services for authentication, authorisation, identity and personalisation, delivering high-quality, production-ready code. 
• Epic Tech Lead: Take on tech lead responsibilities for assigned epics: shaping the technical approach, breaking the work down and steering it through to delivery. 
• Quality and Testing: Write and maintain unit, integration and automated tests, and give constructive code reviews to keep engineering standards high. 
• Operational Excellence: Integrate services with monitoring and observability tooling, and take part in in-hours production support and incident response. Any out-of-hours support is arranged separately. 
• Prioritisation and Flow: Work to the priorities agreed with the team, and flag work that is poorly broken down or blocking delivery, proposing a better approach before picking up new work. 
• Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Work with architects, product and technical leads to turn requirements into implementable solutions, and support less experienced engineers through pairing, code reviews and knowledge sharing. 
• Agile Delivery: Work within an agile, multidisciplinary team to plan, develop and deliver product increments iteratively. 

Qualifications: 

• Backend Proficiency: Over 5 years of production experience building scalable distributed systems and backend services with TypeScript or JavaScript. 
• AWS Serverless: Over 2 years of experience with AWS serverless architecture, including Lambda, API Gateway, CDK and CloudFormation. 
• Test-Driven Development: Strong experience with TDD and broader testing and quality practices. 
• CI/CD and Operations: Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and addressing operational concerns: monitoring, performance testing, scalability, availability, resilience and security. 
• Technical Leadership: Experience as technical lead on at least one medium or large piece of work (3+ months). 
• Nice to Have: Practical experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect and customer identity and access management (CIAM); Java; CloudWatch or Grafana; DynamoDB, Kinesis, ALB/WAF Node.js.
