Intern, Back-End Engineer

The role

As a Back-End Engineering Intern at HelloBiome, you will contribute to building and improving the infrastructure behind our AI-driven microbiome solutions. You’ll work closely with researchers and software engineers to help design, implement, and maintain components of scalable back-end systems that support experimentation with large language models (LLMs) and other AI tools.

This internship is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about back-end development, curious about AI, and eager to learn in a fast-paced R&D environment. You will gain hands-on experience transforming prototypes into functional services, supporting data-intensive workflows, and contributing to technology that advances health innovation.

Requirements

1. Experience with JavaScript and an interest in back‑end development, with a primary focus on Node.js.
2. Active GitHub profile with examples of your work (bonus points for a complete project).
3. Basic understanding of APIs, server‑side application design, and microservice concepts.
4. Some experience with databases (SQL or NoSQL) through coursework or personal projects.
5. Understanding of testing principles and the role of automated tests in maintaining code quality.
6. Strong curiosity and motivation to learn new technologies and engineering practices.
7. Good problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
8. Good communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Nice to Have

1. Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
2. Experience building small APIs or backend services.
3. Experience writing tests using tools such as Jest, Mocha, or similar frameworks.

Responsibilities

1. Help develop and maintain backend services used in HelloBiome products.
2. Work with researchers and engineers to turn research prototypes into reliable backend systems.
3. Contribute to the development of APIs, microservices, and data pipelines supporting LLM and AI workflows.
4. Write automated tests, increase code coverage, and improve the quality of the existing codebase.
5. Support the development of backend data processing services and pipelines.
6. Help ensure system security and compliance, especially for sensitive health data.
7. Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architecture exploration with guidance from senior engineers.
8. Contribute ideas and iterate on solutions to improve system reliability and engineering quality.
