Intern, Back-End Engineer
The role
As a Back-End Engineering Intern at HelloBiome, you will contribute to building and improving the infrastructure behind our AI-driven microbiome solutions. You’ll work closely with researchers and software engineers to help design, implement, and maintain components of scalable back-end systems that support experimentation with large language models (LLMs) and other AI tools.
This internship is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about back-end development, curious about AI, and eager to learn in a fast-paced R&D environment. You will gain hands-on experience transforming prototypes into functional services, supporting data-intensive workflows, and contributing to technology that advances health innovation.
Requirements
- Experience with JavaScript and an interest in back‑end development, with a primary focus on Node.js.
- Active GitHub profile with examples of your work (bonus points for a complete project).
- Basic understanding of APIs, server‑side application design, and microservice concepts.
- Some experience with databases (SQL or NoSQL) through coursework or personal projects.
- Understanding of testing principles and the role of automated tests in maintaining code quality.
- Strong curiosity and motivation to learn new technologies and engineering practices.
- Good problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Experience building small APIs or backend services.
- Experience writing tests using tools such as Jest, Mocha, or similar frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Help develop and maintain backend services used in HelloBiome products.
- Work with researchers and engineers to turn research prototypes into reliable backend systems.
- Contribute to the development of APIs, microservices, and data pipelines supporting LLM and AI workflows.
- Write automated tests, increase code coverage, and improve the quality of the existing codebase.
- Support the development of backend data processing services and pipelines.
- Help ensure system security and compliance, especially for sensitive health data.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architecture exploration with guidance from senior engineers.
- Contribute ideas and iterate on solutions to improve system reliability and engineering quality.
