Senior Legal Manager

As the primary legal advisor for Velex Advisory, the Senior Legal Manager will manage legal matters and ensure regulatory compliance across our African offices. With a strong focus on client services, this role involves advising on licensing, corporate affairs, intellectual property, and other client-focused legal issues, especially within the tech space (fintech, AI, gaming, health tech, big data, etc.).


Key Responsibilities

  • Client-Focused Legal Advisory:

    • Advise clients and internal stakeholders on legal matters including licensing, corporate affairs, and IP

    • Serve as a trusted legal partner for both internal teams and external clients

  • Legal Strategy & Compliance:

    • Develop and implement legal strategies that align with business goals and regulatory requirements across multiple regions

    • Ensure compliance with local and international laws, maintaining high corporate governance standards

  • Contract & Transaction Management:

    • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements, particularly for cross-border and tech-related transactions

    • Lead negotiations to secure favorable outcomes for the company and its clients

  • Team Leadership & Oversight:

    • Supervise and mentor a multi-regional legal team, ensuring best practices in client service and legal support

    • Coordinate legal advisory efforts across Africa to maintain consistent standards and quality

  • Risk & Dispute Management:

    • Identify and mitigate legal risks and oversee dispute resolution, including litigation management when necessary

    • Stay current on evolving legal trends and tech industry developments to proactively manage potential issues


Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: LLB/ LLM from an accredited institution

  • Experience: 5+ years in corporate/commercial law, with at least 2 years in a leadership role managing legal teams

  • Advantage: At least 5 years in the tech industry (fintech, AI, gaming, health tech, big data, etc.) with proven experience in client services (licensing, corporate affairs, IP, etc.)

  • Skills: strong negotiation, communication, and analytical skills

  • Ability to manage multi-regional legal challenges and lead client-centric initiatives
