As a Lead Data Engineer, become a part of a cross-functional development team working to cut company’s costs on Big Data processing.

Responsibilities

• Lead efforts to optimize BigQuery performance, identify and resolve inefficient queries, and implement best practices for data processing at scale
• Proactively analyze SQL code for antipatterns and suggest refactoring to improve query execution, cost efficiency, and maintainability
• Develop and implement strategies for BigQuery storage optimization, including data partitioning, clustering, and archiving
• Collaborate extensively with various data teams to understand their pipelines, identify optimization opportunities, and provide guidance on efficient BigQuery usage
• Design, build, and maintain robust and cost-effective data solutions that leverage BigQuery capabilities to meet evolving business needs
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement in data pipeline efficiency and quality
• Develop and maintain documentation for BigQuery optimization techniques, best practices, and standard operating procedures
• Participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to BigQuery optimization principles and high-quality SQL code standards
• Research and evaluate new BigQuery features and related technologies to enhance data processing capabilities and efficiency
• Act as a subject matter expert for BigQuery, advising on architectural decisions and contributing to the overall data strategy
• Provide support for the maintenance, optimization, and eventual decommissioning of Python-based data applications and pipelines

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience coding in SQL and Python with solid CS fundamentals including data structure and algorithm design
• 2+ years of experience with BigQuery and solid understanding of how it works under the hood
• 3+ years contributing to production deployments of large backend data processing and analysis systems as a team lead
• 3+ years of experience in cloud data platforms (GCP)
• Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software
• Knowledge of Data Warehousing, design, implementation and optimization
• Knowledge of Data Quality testing, automation and results visualization
• Knowledge of BI reports and dashboards design and implementation (Tableau, Looker)
• Knowledge of development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
• Experience participating in an Agile software development team, e.g. SCRUM
• Experience designing, documenting, and defending designs for key components in large distributed computing systems
• A consistent track record of delivering exceptionally high-quality software on large, complex, cross-functional projects
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently
• Experience with supporting data scientists and complex statistical use cases highly desirable

• Understanding of cloud infrastructure design and implementation
• Experience in data science and machine learning

A key focus will be on solving real-world business problems. For example, we are currently working on a project to automate AI contract reviews for our Legal team. We need someone who is not just a skilled programmer, but a creative thinker who can ideate, design solutions, and build compelling demos to show the business what is possible with this transformative technology.

Responsibilities

• Ideate, design, and implement complex, creative solutions using Generative AI technologies to solve tangible business problems
• Write clean, secure, scalable, and well-documented Python code, adhering to best practices
• Lead the continued development of our internal AI chatbot, Jetty, enhancing its capabilities and user experience
• Research, prototype, and implement solutions using emerging AI tools and frameworks
• Develop and deploy agentic AI solutions to automate and improve business processes
• Actively participate in the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), from planning and design through to deployment and maintenance
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business challenges, demonstrate the “art of the possible” with AI, and translate needs into technical requirements
• Perform comprehensive code reviews to ensure high code quality and facilitate knowledge sharing within the team
• Help uphold and enhance the team's engineering and quality standards

Requirements

• Software Engineering:
  • Extensive expertise as a strong Python programmer with a deep understanding of the language and its ecosystem
  • In-depth understanding of core software design paradigms and principles, including Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
  • Proven commercial experience in designing and developing scalable, production-grade applications
  • Proficient in documenting complex software solutions through technical documentation and diagrams
• Cloud & Deployment:
  • Strong required experience in deploying and managing applications within AWS; proficiency with services like AWS Lambda and container orchestration using Kubernetes is very useful
  • A demonstrated commitment to high-quality code, testing, and continuous quality enhancement
  • Hands-on experience utilizing application deployment patterns and tools
• Generative AI:
  • A strong, demonstrable interest in and passion for Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Experience with AI development frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, or AWS Bedrock is highly desirable
  • Experience with search technologies like OpenSearch and vector databases would be a significant advantage
  • Hands-on experience with the APIs of major AI models (e.g., OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude) is a strong plus

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Retail Operational Excellence domain, you will join a dynamic polyglot team primarily focused on building new functionalities as part of the wider Catalogue Information domain, comprising several cross-functional teams. You will be collaborating with multiple product and engineering teams around the world, to help unlock new opportunities for customers and partners to improve their experience when ordering groceries. 

Your role will be pivotal in fostering communication and collaboration. You will work closely with product owners, front-end engineers on web and mobile, as well as other backend engineers. Together, you will design and implement new features, enhance existing ones, boost performance, streamline platforms, and develop robust and scalable backend solutions that serve our extensive customer base.

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Catalogue Information team

• You will play a vital role in collaborating with multiple development teams to design, implement, and maintain applications that meet business requirements
• You will develop and optimize backend solutions on AWS, including deploying services on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) and leveraging AWS cloud services
• You will implement and update Front-End part using React or Vue.js
• You will define technical solutions through our ADR process
• Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions to ensure efficient and reliable software delivery
• Work with Docker containers for application packaging and deployment
• Implement and maintain messaging systems using SQS/SNS
• Design, develop, and optimise databases, including NoSQL and SQL databases, for data storage and retrieval
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, and quality assurance, to deliver high-quality software solutions
• Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and trends to contribute to the team's continuous improvement
• The team operates within the Agile – SCRUM or Kanban framework, emphasising flexibility, continuous improvement, and high-impact collaboration. We engage in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives, which are foundational to our approach in managing projects and driving innovation.
• Technical requirements:
• Strong knowledge of C# .NET 
• Strong knowledge of React or Vue.js, Typescript and JavaScript 
• Proficiency in AWS cloud services, including experience with EKS, Lambda, RDS, and other relevant services 
• Strong knowledge of Docker and containerization technologies 
• Experience with CI/CD using tools like GitHub Actions 
• Devops skills are a big plus as a lot of work will be in there 
• Familiarity with API Gateway management and OpenAPI Specs 
• Prior experience with messaging systems, preferably SQS/SNS 
• Proficiency in working with both NoSQL (preferably DynamoDB) and SQL databases 
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills
