A bit about us and this project:

Advent is a top, global Private Equity Fund (with notable investments in Lululemon, Worldpay, TransUnion and more), and is committed to using technology to streamline and improve all aspects of our investment and value creation processes.

Our goal is to bring data science and machine learning to the private equity investment process. We’ll do this with proprietary software, in the form of digital services and custom applications the investment team will use to drive all aspects of the investment process (sourcing/filtering/diligence/value creation/and divestment).


Our Digital team of 12 people is a tight-knit, congenial group of top performers. Our latest Peakon survey results show a team NPS of 100 (9.5/10 engagement score), putting us in the top percentile of employee satisfaction + engagement in Finance.


What this role offers:

A greenfield opportunity to build real-world systems on a modern machine learning and data analytics stack. This technology will be used to decide where billions of dollars will be invested.

Working in a collaborative, fast-moving team in close collaboration with experienced people who have held senior roles at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bain and more

Responsibilities

Ingest, integrate, clean, map, and analyze dozens of unique external and internal alternative data sets (Alternative data sets are publicly available sources that allow analysts to extract insights on how companies are performing. These can range from Twitter sentiment to Glassdoor, but also to more obscure and significantly larger datasets)

Automate and create heat maps to augment firm’s investment decisions and due diligence

Autonomously create and manage analytical projects and bring them from ideation to launch

Create and communicate valuable insights from our datasets

Python & SQL-driven Analysis: Work on an analytics platform with large datasets using advanced queries, filters, cohort, retention, concentration, penetration, elasticity, and competitive analyses

Help create and maintain internal datasets such as web scraped data

You

Must have:

- Python and PySpark expert
- Expert knowledge of multiple databases both relational and nosql, being able to articulate the benefits and downsides of each
- Experience handling terabyte size datasets, diving into data to discover hidden patterns, using data visualization tools, writing SQL, and working with managers to develop models
- Experience cleaning and enriching data
- At least 2 year of experience w/ one or more of Spark, Airflow, Hadoop, AWS Athena, Redshift, Snowflake, GCP BigQuery
- Experience w/ multiple web scraping / web crawler tools
- Highly independent and capable of spec-ing his own work staying aware of the needs of the company
- Ability or desire to learn visualization techniques and software
- Excitement for the venture capital and private equity space and the opportunity to make data-driven decisions in it

Nice to have:

- Experience with Javascript/NodeJs/GraphQL/Hasura
- Experience correlating items from multiple sources when there is no unique identifier
- Bachelor's degree in a highly quantitative field (Computer Science, Machine Learning, Operational Research, Statistics, Mathematics, etc.) or equivalent professional or military experience
- Basic experience with ML or adjacent fields, e.g., natural language processing, random forest, linear regression, statistical learning theory, predictive modeling, and data science concepts
- Experience writing and speaking about technical concepts to business, technical, and lay audiences and giving data-driven presentations
