JavaScript developer for language learning apps (offline)

You will develop mobile and web apps helping language learners read, listen, watch, and communicate in a foreign language. This is a developer position, not markup, although good understanding of HTML/CSS is required. It is a full-time remote position. Some written English is required (not necessarily perfect), spoken is a plus but not required. We are mostly looking for a middle to senior level developer, but there are no rigid bounds, we might be interested in a beginner too if he or she is really good and smart. Our culture and way of work is creative, informal, and we value deep understanding and agile mind much more than the number of years formally spent on this or that framework.

If you are a good front-end developer, it's fine and you might not need to write server code. If you can do Node.js, that's even better. On the server side, we use Node.js for user-facing requests, Python and some JavaScript for NLP and data analysis, and also Java where we must optimize performance to an extent that can't be reached in JavaScript. Knowing Java is not required. Most of our code is written in JavaScript, both on the server and on the client. If you know Java or Python, we have work there too, but if you don't know it, it's fine.

We are a product company, and more than just that, we have our own platform that realizes our idea that language should be used rather than learned, and technology should help language learners to read books and articles, watch videos, listen to songs, and consume other kinds of media. We still call ourselves a startup, we are still relatively small, but our company has already grown during several years and has considerable achievements in realizing our idea.

About Språkkraft (Canada/Sweden)

Note: We DO NOT and WILL NOT hire citizens of Russia and Belarus.

Språkkraft (sprakkraft.org) is a Swedish company developing language learning apps. We are changing the way people read, listen and watch everything in a second language, so that language learning does not require dedicated studying but happens naturally as a by-product of reading articles, books, listening to songs and audiobooks, watching movies and documentaries.

Our app for Swedish public television, SVT Språkplay won the Best European Online Project of the Year in 2018 at the pan-European broadcasting competition Prix Europa. We have long-running contracts with public television broadcasters in Sweden and Finland and with a Swedish educational video provider. Our apps are used by hundreds of thousands of immigrants learning Swedish and Finnish languages (web app example: https://kielikoulu.yle.fi, mobile app examples see on https://sprakkraft.org/). We have also released an app for learning language while reading and watching media for English, Spanish, French, Italian and German (https://lingoal.com/). Our cause is to help immigrants integrate and succeed in the new culture and society, and to help anyone to understand and enjoy another culture in its own language. We are a relatively small, creative, distributed team based in Sweden, Canada and Ukraine. I live in Toronto, Canada.

Programming languages and frameworks: Angular, Ionic, React, Node.js, Python, Java, Kotlin, Objective-C/Swift.
