Payment Risk Analyst
TodaPay is an international fintech company operating in the digital payments and financial infrastructure space across multiple jurisdictions. We support high-growth payment operations with multi-currency transactions, crypto payments, and complex corporate structures.
The Payment Risk Analyst is an independent control function responsible for identifying, analysing and preventing payment risks at the level of merchants, MIDs, channels and providers. The role covers all payment channels: card acquiring, alternative payment methods (APM), payouts and crypto channels. The analyst is not responsible for conversion, volumes or revenue.
Goal of the role: to identify and mitigate payment risks (chargebacks, fraud, penalties and blocks from card schemes and acquirers, insufficient reserve coverage) in a timely manner, and to give the business well-founded risk recommendations independent of commercial interests.
Responsibilities:
Chargeback, refund and fraud monitoring
- Monitor chargeback and refund rates by merchant, MID, provider and payment method.
- Track card scheme monitoring programs (Visa VAMP, Mastercard ECM / EFM) and set internal early-warning thresholds below program limits.
- Analyse fraud rates, fraud patterns and chargeback reason codes; forecast threshold breaches.
- Propose adjustments to anti-fraud rules based on identified patterns.
Merchant risk monitoring
- Detect anomalies in merchant behaviour (card-only traffic, sudden FTD spikes, atypical average tickets, changes in GEO and BIN mix).
- Track merchants approaching critical chargeback and fraud thresholds.
- Issue early warnings to BizDev and Payment Operations when traffic moves into a higher-risk zone.
- Recommend restrictions where needed: disabling risky GEOs, blocking specific BINs, or switching off a payment method when risk outweighs earnings.
New merchant onboarding and ramp-up
- Prepare risk assessments for new merchants based on processing history and payment traffic, using Compliance results without duplicating its checks.
- Define starting limits (daily and monthly volume, average ticket) and a schedule for gradually raising them.
- Review limits based on actual performance and recommend increasing, maintaining or lowering them.
Financial risk coverage
- Monitor accumulated Rolling Reserve and available settlement balance per merchant.
- Make sure there are always enough funds (RR + settlement) to cover potential penalties; recommend disabling risky methods when coverage is insufficient.
- Recommend changes to minimum settlement or payout schedule when risk rises sharply.
Payout and alternative channel risks
- Monitor payouts for abnormal amounts and frequency, new or repeated payout details, and mismatches with the merchant’s incoming volume.
- Monitor APM and crypto channels for abnormal volumes, atypical counterparties and signs of circumventing restrictions.
Risk restrictions register and decision log
- Maintain an up-to-date register of restrictions by merchant, GEO, BIN, method and MID, with the reason, date and review deadline.
- Hand restrictions over to Payment Operations for implementation, and verify that actual routing matches the register and assess the effect.
- Keep a full log of risk decisions (date, initiator, reason, basis, executor, actual effect).
- Make sure a problematic merchant’s traffic is not redistributed between MIDs or providers solely to bypass monitoring program thresholds.
AML signals
- Immediately pass signs of suspicious transactions, schemes and possible AML violations to Compliance.
Reporting
- Weekly risk report on merchants, MIDs, channels and providers.
- Monthly overview for management: risk metrics trends, restrictions introduced and lifted, and their actual effect.
Requirements: - Practical experience in payment risk analytics, fraud monitoring or chargeback management; high-risk processing experience is an advantage.
- Understanding of the chargeback lifecycle, reason codes, and Visa and Mastercard requirements (including VAMP, ECM / EFM).
- Understanding of Rolling Reserve and settlement mechanics, and of payout risks.
- Confident Excel / Google Sheets skills; SQL and BI tools are desirable at entry and become necessary as the team moves to an automated dashboard.
- Experience maintaining a change log for restrictions, limits or payment system settings.
- Strong analytical skills: able to draw concise conclusions and argue recommendations.
- Ability to keep analytical conclusions independent under commercial pressure.
- English at B2 (Upper-Intermediate) or higher for working with documentation, providers and acquirers.
