Data Engineer (Hong Kong timezone)

About the Role

Our client, a growing tech company operating in a fast-paced startup environment, is looking for an experienced Data Engineer to own and evolve their data infrastructure. You’ll be the sole Data Engineer in a cross-functional team — collaborating closely with leadership, DevOps, research, and customer support to ensure data pipelines and analytics remain reliable, efficient, and scalable.

This role suits someone hands-on, communicative, and proactive, comfortable taking ownership and driving improvements independently.

🚀 Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using Apache Airflow (experience with MWAA is a strong plus).
• Manage and optimize data storage and processing in Snowflake.
• Write and maintain high-quality SQL for data modeling, transformation, and analysis.
• Collaborate with DevOps, research, and product teams to identify and resolve data-related issues.
• Ensure data reliability, scalability, and performance across systems.
• Participate in QA and debugging sessions with teams in Hong Kong timezone (occasional overlap required).

✅ Requirements:

• 5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer.
• Strong experience with Apache Airflow (preferably MWAA) and Snowflake.
• Excellent command of SQL and understanding of data modeling principles.
• Experience in startup or small-company environments, where adaptability and initiative are key.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills — proactive and responsive, especially via Slack during working hours.
• English level: B2+ (comfortable communicating with international stakeholders).
• Availability to overlap with Hong Kong timezone several times per week for coordination and debugging.

Nice to Have:

• Familiarity with Python-based ETL frameworks.
• Experience integrating data from multiple APIs or microservices.
• Understanding of data governance, performance tuning, and cost optimization in Snowflake.
